Reading another post reminded me of my favourite game ever. Fallout 2. It had some of the best random encounters I have ever seen in any game. Here are some of my favorites.
Bridge of Doom: Bridge keeper asks you three questions. Answer the third with a questions and the bridge keeper destroys himself. (See Monty Python and the Holy Grail)
Whale landing site: One of the encounters you come across a whale carcass with a broken pot of petunias next to it. If you have the awareness perk, you get the promp that they appear to have fallen from a great height. (See Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy).
Time Portal: In one of the random encounters you are briefly teleported to Vault 13 (from Fallout 1), You can run around for awhile with no encounters and after fiddling with some computers you accidentally break the only remaining water chip. If you played Fallout 1 you would know that this is the reason you leave the vault in the first game and the events that lead to that character starting the village where the character you are in Fallout 2 is born...
Honorable mentions are the Cafe of Broken Dreams, the Tinman and the Star Trek crash site.
