What's the greatest game of this generation?

Personally I loved Bioshock infinite and its use of the multiverse theory in a game is epic. It sucks but the internet loves syrim so I'll let em have it but if it was up to me it would be bioshock infinite up there.

Still for best game of the generation I would imagine they would have included a greater spread, where's Pokemon, AC, the first Grid, Rome total war, snake, etc. Seems very limited to stuff they can flog in a sale.

Starcraft 2.

Enough said.

/leaves for all to marvel at its greatness

Edit.

/returns

If I had to choose one from their choices, I would probably go with Skyrim.

I think the biggest problem is with the parameters for the competition.

What constitutes "generation", since I am an unmarried adult with no offspring, I'm still a single generation - but granted I would accept a typical generation to be 25 years before it spawns the next.

Having said that, 25 years ago I played Prince of Persia, Frogger, Snake & Gorilla on QBasic. None of these games, or games 10 years after that a la Police Quest / Space Quest / Duke Nukem 1&2 / BioMenace / Commander Keen / Monster Bash / Doom1 etc. were even mentioned.

The problem here is the available technology at the time is not taken into account. My personal favourite games of all time are KOTOR 1 & 2 - obviously Monkey Islandâ„¢ isnt counted because it would win every category, every time.

So yeah, if they went with games of this decade, you're still not even counting half of the decade's work. World of Warcraft, as controversial as it is, has to be right up there as one of the greats - the numbers don't lie and it truly is a captivating experience. If we keep it to single player games of the last 5 years, then we're hitting fair ground.

This is why Skyrim would win, but no mention is made of Oblivion/Daggerfall/Morrowind. Or Portal 2 would be up there with no mention of Portal 1, or red dead redemption instead of red dead revolver. Heck, GTA1 was absolutely ground breaking and paved the way for the rest, but it gets no mention either.

In summary, this is about as skewed as asking people to vote for the best song of this generation. 90% would be of songs in the last 5 years as well. So what decides what is best? Quality or popularity?

The only game that I have not played on that lists is The Last of Us.

The others are all great and I agree that Skyrim is the best game that I have played on my Xbox.

I would have replaced Portal 2 with The Orange Box.

for this generation as in current console generation, i would say definately bioshock that game was worth the R700 i spent on it 5 years ago and still is, also uncharted 2, it really moved the goal posts in terms of making an orsome adventure game and the leap in design and graphics between uc1 and 2 was so big that the difference between uc2 and 3 seem marginal in comparison.

i personally feel mass effect trounces all of them.

Popularity of course. That's probably why The witcher is not on this list.

Wow greatest game of this generation...Hmmm I think that Skyrim is a fantastic game and deserves all the accolades it has managed to get, but to give it the GAME OF THE GENERATION reward...that I'm not sure. Yes it has absolutely massive appeal and longevity, but is it honestly better than GTA4, Uncharted, Portal and the likes...I don't know

Honestly I think that this type of list will be way to subjective. My personal top 16 list of games this console generation is a bit different than theirs, and that's alright by me.

The list of games is seriously lacking. It's more like the best games of the last few years. Game of the Generation is a poor choice of words. They just took the best-selling games and then made people vote out of those. To me it isn't necessarily how popular the game is, or even if it's rated as good by other people that defines a game as great. So my choices are going to be very different.

While Fallout 3 was good, I personally prefer Fallout New Vegas, bugs and all. The only other game I've played there is BioShock.

Starcraft 2.

This.

As MissileToe and others have said, to refer to this as "game of the generation" is really overkill. There are definitely a lot of god games there, but it seems to ignore several genres and games which have a huge following. What about racing or sport genres? What about strategy and sim? The games mentioned are at the peak now, but will fall off the radar in time whereas there are plenty of others that remain fixtures and have longevity.

Y u no vote by genre?!

This is not Lord of the games, no one game to rule them all!

Skyrim, IMO, is the greatest sandbox RPG of this generation. I would dare say greatest of all time - until the next elder scrolls with creation kit comes out. :p

Is morrowind not a sandbox RPG? If so then to compare it to skyrim is like comparing dirt to a diamond... Morrowind being the diamond.
