What's your fav strategy game? (RTS)

Planetary annihilation - the AI still catches me regularly with a move I didn't expect. Very sneaky with their cross planet portals occasional rush strategies.

I'm guessing most people will say StarCraft 2, which is undeniably a very good game. I just can't resist the charm and nostalgia of C&C Tiberian Sun. The AI wasn't very clever, but enough of a challenge at higher difficulty levels.

Total Annihilation has always been one of my favourite games ever, nevermind RTS.

Supreme Commander (& Forged Alliance), the spiritual successor(s), are also great games with even better AI. (Sup Com 2 sucks, just for the record)

If you haven't played Total Annihilation yet, you should get right on that.

Of all time? Warcraft 3, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires III, Rise of Nations, Homeworld & Company of Heroes.

Current games: just StarCraft 2.

Despite this list of critically acclaimed games, my personal favourite is Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. Playing in the Star Wars universe was amazing.

Starcraft and Company of Heroes are both pretty amazing and classics, although I have been told by Tsar that Men of War is the much better game.

However, personally I will give that title to Dawn of War I and II. Solid gameplay (Despite II removing the base building) good story and fun Skirmishes on LAN/MP. AI can be super tough, similar to the harder AI difficulties on SC2.

Men of war assualt squad 2 is good. Though I wish people played it in sa. There a shit tone of single player map backs and mods. I have put in 132 hours in it already.

If I had to hazard a guess as to how much time I've sunk into them, the order of most played SP RTS's for me would be

Starcraft 2 (dem Achievements... played each campaign through like 3 times)
Red Alert
Warcraft 3
Starcraft
Red Alert 2
Age of Mythology
Age of Empires 2
Red Alert 3 "whistling:

Played most other RTS's but once I was done with the campaign I didn't come back for another go. The above are the only ones I can remember playing through multiple times in SP.

I'd say only SC2 has good AI. All the others get to a point where after a few games you figure out the AI's general strategy and it becomes quite gamey. Still fun going through the motions though.

Most of the Total War games with some mods. It feels more balanced than the usual SC2/C&C games where the AI has to generally cheat to fake difficulty.

The Wargame series isn't bad either.

My all time favourite, Fallout Tactics, although a bit old now and not 100% RTS.

Try out Grey Goo, more modern RTS, I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very good.

Just mentioning some others I also enjoyed throughout the years:
Dune
Star Wars: Empire at war
Star Craft
Genewars
S.W.I.N.E
Age of Methology

Did you ever play Star Wars: Empire at War? Made by Petroglyph, a company started by a number of former Westwood employees after EA shut them down.

Galactic Battlegrounds is nice and all, but it's really just AoE2 with a Star Wars skin. EaW has a decent-looking 3D engine, some nice meta-elements moving your forces between planets, proper space battles, and some great planetside environments complete with weather effects. It's the best Star Wars RTS ever, imho.

RTS is one of my all-time favorite genres. I started out with Dune 2, graduated to Command & Conquer and WarCraft 2, and played or owned every Westwood and Blizzard RTS after that.

Other favourites include the Age of Empires series, of course (AoE 2 is a timeless classic). I loved Empire at War, as I mentioned above.

Another series I absolutely adore is Battle for Middle Earth. Games based on movies tend to be terrible, but these are actually very solid and brilliant fun to play. If you want to recreate some epic battles from the movies, there's no substitute.

More recently, I've been playing a bit of Act of Aggression, made by Eugen System, the folks behind the Wargames series. It's OK, but doesn't really scratch the itch I was looking for, which is a modern military RTS in the vein of what Generals 2 would have been. Damn you EA for killing C&C. We will never forget.

I played the crap out of Tiberian Sun. The original C&C is still my favourite though; probably my favourite game of all time.

I agree on the original C&C, but Tiberian Sun just holds up much better compared to newer games. I finished both GDI and Nod campaigns of the first game at least 10 times, not to mention the hundreds of skirmishes against the AI and the odd multiplayer game over serial-link when I could be arsed to drag the bulky machine and monitor over to a friend's house.

Ah yes, those monstrous CRT's... Good times :D

Nope, never played it. Feeling like I should check it out.

I see the Star Wars Humble Bundle has both the Galactic Battlegrounds Saga and Empire at War: Gold Pack for $14, along with some other games. Maybe that's my best route.

Sounds like a good deal, yeah. I picked the EaW Gold Pack up on Steam recently, also very cheaply.

If you're a Star Wars fan and an RTS player, I'd say Empire at War is a must play.
