Which games had surprisingly good stories?

There are games where we expect there to be a good story - particularly when it comes to RPG's and Adventure games. However not all games are all about the story, in those the story is a backdrop to the gaming action.

But what about those games where we don't expect much of a story and yet the story is surprisingly good? What games have you played that had surprisingly and unexpectedly storylines?

One of these for me was Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. It's a Western FPS, all about gunfights and dynamite and yet I thoroughly enjoyed the story and connected with the characters.

Mine is the Longest Journey and Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters - I thought the puzzles where going to be the most important part, but I have replayed these so many times now and I still get sad during it.

I expected Wolfenstein: New Order to have a story, but I never expected it to be as good as it is. It's a tremendous game with amazing cinematography.

And while this might sound stupid, but Age of Empires 2. The campaigns, especially from the DLC, has some wonderfully told stories within each mission, all coming together neatly. I actually got invested in some of the stories. Never even considered that AoE would have good stories, but hey

I totally get what you are saying, I really enjoyed the stories of Joan of Arc and El Cid.

El Cid was awesome, and the DLC for the African countries was just as great. I also enjoyed how the story developed, changed and turned even during the matches. I even found some small "side quest" like optional missions to do as well.

Machine games really out did the character development in the new Wolfenstein series. Blazkowicz character is a lot more humanized in comparison to the older series. Adding in a great supporting cast greatly assisted in making William much more, relate-able.

Sure it's got it's silly moments and and some ridiculous humour...

Okay, okay. So you put a Nazi on the Moon. F*ck you, Moon.

Then it digs deep and knocks you flat with some really great monologues.

The monster never dies no matter how many times you kill it. It just sheds it's skin and changes form. I Can feel the weight of the world pushing me down. I try to carry it nonetheless. One last time. Then I can rest.

Machine games took a notes, out of Tarrintino and del Toro's books and created an amazing series.

Spec ops: The Line, thought it would just be a normal turn-off-brain shoot everything that moves, but no, no other game's story has made me feel like more of an a-hole than that one, one of my favourite fps games

I'm actually half way through Wolfenstein: New Order at the moment, and it's very cool. Oldish game so I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is, and it was super cheap on Xbox live. I also bought Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, so I have that lined up to play too.

Brothers a tale of two sons, it still remains the most heart filled story I have ever played and that's from a game where you can't and are not meant to understand a single word that is spoken. I played it just after I finished the last of us and I received a lot of flack for saying I think it's story hits you harder than tlou

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Not sure what I was expecting when I first started it, but it ended up having a truly great and memorable story.

Some of my most surprising picks of recent games (off the top of my head) are To The Moon, Life is Strange, Code 7, Digital: A Love Story, and Analogue: A Hate Story.

This is excluding a bunch of games with great stories I wouldn't say caught me by surprise. Though by that measure, Analogue's good story shouldn't have been much of a surprise considering how much I enjoyed Digital, I guess.

Another game that immediately came to mind was the old Strike Commander. I was expecting a straight-forward combat flight simulator and instead got something with a great story and interesting management mechanics.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Final Fantasy x and mass effect (well im still playing this one almost 10 years now), to be honest i think COD 4 actually had a very good hollywoodish storyline
