Which gender do you pick in games and why?

Mr. Nice Guy
I almost always pick male characters and if I can change the way they look I make them look like myself. It just feels like the natural thing to do.

Twice I've played female characters though. Well actually it started with proper pen and paper DnD where I played a character called Claire once. She was my longest running DnD character and I grew quite fond of her. So the two times where I picked a female character in games I played as her.

First it was in the original Guild Wars. Guys just gave me stuff. I swear it spoiled the game for me. I roleplayed as Claire and she was immensely popular. I didn't have to play to get gear since guys would just give me stuff the whole time. If that's how women really have it in MMOs then they've got it easy. But if they also get so much attention then it must be incredibly annoying.

Now the second time I'm playing Claire in Dragon Age Inquisition. The choice came because in the first Dragon Age I played a male Elven mage. Then the second game I played a male Human fighter. So now I'm playing as a female Elven rogue. One thing I forgot about is that Dragon Age has sex scenes but luckily one can go the lesbo route! :)

How about you guys and gals? Which gender do you pick in games and why?

I play almost exclusively as a female character. More because I don't like the way most male characters move and look. The few games where I am not given a choice, I actually struggle to play the game.

I tend to not use the fact that I am a female gamer to score stuff, altho I have done it once or twice to get better prices in Warframe. Their trading can be over priced so I haggle and claim to try and get a piece of gear or blue print for my b/f as a surprise and weirdly the people fall for it and I get the item I want for a reasonable price.

But in MMO's I worked my arse off for my gear I don't want freebies. I will gladly buy or trade my stuff for what I need.

I gotta say for me its 99.9% female. I mean in 3rd person games (usually the ones where you get the choice and it actually means something, apart from just "his / hers" in option menu) I'm gonna be staring at their backside all the time...so why not make it a girls ass? :D

Otherwise I take female for the voice...and because hey, why not, they can kick ass too, you know!

As a dude, I also play as female. Just be to different, as it's way too boring always playing male in almost every game where you cannot choose whether to be male or female. Mostly common in FPS games

It depends greatly on the title and character. For some odd reason if I can pick a human thief/rogue they are female (I blame Imoen from Baldur's gate for this)

I have played Mass Effect with both male and female Shepard. So I guess its about 80/20 for male/female characters.

This right here. Sums it up perfectly!

I've found in many instances, the female voice actors tend to, IMO, do a better voice over.

Jennifer Hale (as Shepard); the way she presents the character really makes you feel like you're a commander. I tried it with the male voice actor and I did not, honestly, get the same vibe.

The only time I played a game to its end using a male voice actor (by choice) was in Saints Row 2. IIRC.

Seems likeI'm the only one here who chooses male if and when I have a choice. Couple that with an engineer-type class and I'm settled.

My 1 sibling is also preferable to the male 'class'. The other not, but it's understandable as it's my sister. :)

my sister was 'The other' that I mentioned. My brother (sibling) is preferable to male characters.

Almost exclusively male unless it's any type of elf assassin/rogue/shadow class, then for some reason it makes sense to go female. Most times I play Bladeforged (in DDO) and then it doesn't matter as you can't tell them apart - like so, heh

I usually pick a male character (so that I can romance the ladies) but every now and then I pick a female character. I reckon the next time I play through the Mass Effect trilogy I'll go with the female character.

Slightly off topic, I've found that going with a character that isn't your usual choice can be really fun. For Saints 3 I went with a busty supermodel woman and didn't really enjoy my character but with Saints 4 I went with a buff, black guy (a la Terry Crews) and it was the best choice ever, the character suits the zaniness of the game perfectly.

I agree with you, It depends on which game you are playing and what role you are playing. Generally because I would play almost exclusively as Barbarian type ( heavy ) in games I would always choose a buff male. Kinda like a viking, (obviously with alot of facial hair :P ) , When I do play as a mage/sorceress (like I did in diablo 2 ) then I prefer to go female. In this case its important to note that choosing a female didn't just change gender, it was a whole separate character class with different attributes, so when you take that into account it definitely comes down to what role you want to play.

It depends entirely on my perception of the character... To put it in perspective, with a game like Diablo, Barbarian, obviously a guy, Monk, sort of 60-40 but still a guy, Mage ALWAYS a chick, Demon Hunter, ALWAYS a chick, Witch Docotor is a complete 50/50 for me, and then Crusader is a guy no doubt about it...

Female

Movement is more fluid, they look good in anything (gotta love heavy full body armor and a large two handed sword)

I tend to play male if the female model isn't very good (like DarkSouls 2 where they just copied the male's armature and use the same rig)

Probably going to play Female in Fallout 4 when it comes out.
