Which SSD brand to buy

So my Visual Studio is not working so good anymore... actually, my whole primary partition is getting a bit crowded as I haven't done a clean Windows install in quite some time.
Anyway, so this seems like a good time to get a bigger SSD for the new Windows installation... and so that I can keep my existing setup for a backup. Will try to convert it to a VM later so that I can run my current Windows within the new Windows.

Anyway, back to point. Any recommendations on which brand of SSD to buy?
I see there is a SanDisk Extreme 240Gb SSD for R2500 at Takealot.

Performance and Reliability is priority for me without paying too much.

With normal hard drives, I always go Seagate (non-negotiable), but with SSDs... every Tom, Dick and Harry has got their brand on offer.

Best brands right now

Samsung
Crucial M4
Corsair Neutron
Intel

In that order.

I have OCZ Vectors and I love them but people are saying there is a bad batch floating around so not sure on those.

I would pick the Neutron.

Synchronous still better than Asynchronous ? (speed)

I'd seriously considering buying the cheapest semi-brand name & calling it a day. The gap between HDD & SSD is so massive that you're really not going to notice the difference between a 100% and 105% improvement. Do buy the biggest one you can afford though (space over speed) & be sure to have backups set up.

You'd definitely know the difference between sata 2 and sata 3 :D

the Adata S510 120GB is on special at rebeltech i think for R1000. One of my mates are looking at it. I have the Adata S511 my mate has the OCZ Vertex 3 ( they came out roughly the smae time ) and you will not see the difference between them. Mine is simply working like a machine and since ive recommended it to some friends of which 2 are using Adata SSD drives.

This time around I am not gonna agree with some of you guys xD
When it comes to SSD's its not about the speed but the reliability.

SFC based SSD's can cause issues where as MLC based SSD's are more reliable and don't come with many issues.
Its not to say they can't go wrong, but they go wrong a lot less than SF SSD's.

@OP Go for the neutron in the link I provided.

We use the Intel 330 SSD at work, it a beauty. Personally I a OCZ Vertex 3, no issue, blistering performance. I also have a Patriot Pyro 120GB, but it failed in the first 2 months of owning it so I can't recommend the brand :(

Ok thanks... Did some digging and the Neutron seems to perform rather well against the "faster" rated drives. And with the controller, the speeds for writing compressible and incompressible data is about the same and it comes with 5 years warranty.
Will go for that.

Do you have any links you can post here? :o

Shucks... I closed the windows... let me see if I can track them down again

Edit:
Ok, facepalm moment. Seems I was looking at the Neutron GTX instead of just Neutron. The GTX version is about R500 more expensive, but it isn't far behind the Samsung. Here's the review I was looking at.

Here are the tests for the normal Neutron for R2.5k

Has anyone here used a hybrid drive yet, i'm curious how much faster it is, will look for a benchmark compare later.

They are a little more expensive than a standard hdd but way cheaper than a ssd. Im wondering if it worthwhile

Is it worth buying a bigger drive and putting a few games on?

Normally I like to keep my Windows drive small, clean and defragmented.

I'd like to know as well. I'm really keen on buying a SSD as well, but i can't decide if a 128GB would work out better than a 240GB. The plan is to have windows installed on it and then maybe some games that i play more often then others, which would be a perfect setup for the 128GB.

But then again i might as well save up and get a 240GB which would give me some extra breathing room after windows is installed.

I don't know about games.
I use it for my work partition and load all my applications and 3rd party components as well as one or two of my projects on it in order to get the best possible performance from it. When it comes to my work partition, I'm a bit of a performance junkie.

For games though, I think my normal hard drive is good enough. Besides, I think my graphics cards are the bottleneck at the moment, rather than my HDD.

1 or two games with longer load times works: BF3 for instance.

Remember not to defrag your SSD, it reduces the lifespan rater reinstall win every now and then and format.
