unfortunately i have a I5 2400 so I cant overclock except by messing with voltage which i'm not so sure i want to attempt.

Im suprised by the poll results, especial you @Eugene I thought you would be overclocking your rig for some reason.

For gaming...not really no, the only game I know of that likes faster ram is Battlefield 4, where I gained about 10fps by ocing the memory. Memory clocking is more for benchmarking, you can score some serious points by ocing ram and its actually quite easy.

As for CPU overclocking, also makes very little difference in games, mainly for benchmarking.
GPU overclocking combined with CPU overclocking can net you some awesome gaming performance increases.

Edit: The only thing I've ever lost due to overclocking was a weak Kingston memory module.

Its actually hard to mess up when overclocking if you just do a little bit of research and keeping your voltage and temps in check, you'll be fine.

I overclocked a CPU once before some years ago. Got about 3-5 FPS more. I felt uncomfortable with the OC and reverted it to normal after a while. I don't bother with OC now, as I am perfectly content and satisfied with my current performance.
 
I dont overclock (atm), because my computer can run the games i play to my requirements, so i have no need yet. :)
 
What I do need as a performance increase would be 4GBs more RAM - @ a higher frequency as well, if possible (DDR3-1600).

If you only have 4GB atm, then yes more RAM would be a good choice however at a higher frequency wouldn't make that much difference anyways.

I do only have 4GBs right now. 8GBs would be preferred. Won't there at least be a slight increase of the frequency is higher, albeit just smoother overall performance, even if minor?

8GB is pretty much the bare minimum I would recommend, especially with the games that are coming out in the next 4 months.
Ram speed makes little to no difference in gaming, I've only ever seen 1 game benefit from faster ram and that was Battlefield 4.

I would def recommend you grab yourself another 4GB module. Make sure they match, as in identical speed, voltage, model.

Do you think it'll be necessary to move to 16GB at all? I was playing Far Cry 3 earlier today and noticed on MSI Afterburner that only around 2-3GB gets used... All 4 cores of the CPU were used though, 2 at around 90% and the other 2 at around 80%.

Still need to give you a shout about the temps in the case - both GPU and CPU were in the high 90's when playing today.
