It's kinda like a test version of a game or software. It isn't guaranteed to be stable but it provides a good insight into what needs fixing based on the feedback of testers (usually members of the general public)

It's a a pre-retail version of the game the developers use to fix any final bugs. It's a limited access thing, hence the reason everyone is jumping on it. What's great about it, is that you get to play the game before it's released :)

Beta is a term used for testing a game. You get a closed and a public beta. Closed is when only a few people are allowed to test/play the game and a public beta is when everyone gets the chance to play the game before it is officially released - Beta usually refers to testing but it actually defines the stage the software is in at the moment.
