Whose lines have already been upgraded by Telkom?

Still stuck on 4 megs even with the amount of Telkom vans I see coming and going from my UMC box they never seem to upgrade it at all :(.

Nothing has changed at all and still see Telkom vans everywhere so wonder what they actually doing.

Mine was upgraded to 4MB, think it was close to end of Dec 2013.

Since then the fastest speedtest result I got was 3.5Mb/s which is awesome.
BUT
I can count ON ONE HAND the number of times this has happened.

I work during the day. And at night during "peak times" the speed is about 1.6MB/s - 1.9Mb/s which is slightly better than what is was on the 2MB line.

I might as well downgrade back to the 2MB line, but then my average would probably on a good day be 1.2Mb/s again.

TLDR: TELKOM SUCKS

edit: my colleagues from work (who knows about these things) says the dslam in my area is congested.

I asked my ISP to downgrade my line to 4Mbps. It was only syncing at 7Mbps, and by going down to 4Mbps I save R100pm. Might even consider going down to 2Mbps later, now that I have an uncapped 2Mbps account for R99pm. I have other accounts as well - so that's why I don't simply downgrade to 2Mbps immediately.

I tend to agree with them, but is your latency stable during this time? If it is, it's probably not a congested exchange and maybe rather line conditions. My latency went through the roof when my exchange was congested a few months ago. It can go from 250 to 1000 in seconds online and then just become completely unplayable.

Who do you have your R99 account with?

They upgraded my area when they originally announced the upgrades to 10mb. I can only sync at 6mb though...which im kinda ok with.

I just did the Telkom ADSL check and it said this:

ADSL Availability
Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area 40 Mbps
Your Current Service speed 10 Mbps

I wasnt even aware that my current line was 10Mbps ! sitting on my Mweb account of 4mbps uncapped, so if i upgrade my Mweb account, I should have a 10mpbs connection ? Its only R599 a month for data only uncapped 10mpbs with Mweb

Not necessarily.

Your exchange supports 10Mbps, but that does not mean that your line's quality is good enough for it to support 10Mbps. You might end up somewhere between 4 and 10.

But it says

"Maximum speed available in your area 40 Mbps
Your Current Service speed 10 Mbps"

Does that not mean the exchange supports 40Mbps and my current line is 10Mbps?

So if i upgrade my mweb account i should get 10mbps ?

Yes it appears like your exchange supports 40Mbps.

No, you still won't be guaranteed 10Mbps, it depends on the distance from your home to the exchange and the quality of the copper.

Okay cool, but if we upgrade to the 10Mpbs uncapped with Mweb we should still see a noticeable difference from the current 4mpbs account ? I didnt even know the line had gone up to 10mpbs

Theoretically yes, but you will have to pay a ton more. I don't do business with MWEB, I don't agree with their business models.
