Why are online gamers jerks?

A reason why I love the ignore options in games.
In HON I have 14 people that is just there to try to get a response out of people by baiting them.
 
There are a number of things that lead to this behaviour ; Insecurity, Frustrations, Anger issues etc. But the main thing is that Anonymity breeds Apathy. It doesnt bother you as much to be a colossal dick to an animation or to simply a voice; the other person means nothing to you so you feel you can do what you want. I can almost guarantee that a large portion of the animosity would decrease if onlne games had a Screen in screen webcam stream of the player's face.
 
I also believe that some people are jerks online because they are "feceless" when interacting with others. These same people will never act in this way towards someone they meet face to face. They feel much more bold and confident online because there are no real consequence when acting like a delinquent or jerk online. These same people are absolute pushovers or timid in real life in most cases. And then you have the issue of upbringing and manners, character and personal morals and if a person does not have this, they will be jerks online.

It is indeed the issue of "facelessness" that I believe is truly the greatest contributor to being a scumbag on the internet.
 
It's the nature of man give a person a platform to say what he wants with out any consequences and you get cod online.
 
People only rage because I'm better than them 8)

I tend to get heated when things don't go my way, I've calmed down a lot with BF4 though, which is shocking because it's way more buggy than BF3 was.
 
It must be because they have no backbone or values and hide behind their fake online identities. It is sickening actually. I just don't understand why they can't just be civil online with others.
 
It's easy to talk smack when you are hiding behind your TV. I wouldn't be surprised if the people being jerks are the ones who wouldn't dare being so aggressive in real life.
 
Tbh i've been threatened by a few gamers and being that i don't stand back for anyone i have asked for addresses, and funny enough no one is ever brave enough to give me their place of living because i'm one of those type of people that if you threaten me you gotta be able to back it up. I hate KB Rambo's but once someone did take that chance and though i wouldn't show up but i showed up at this oke's house, once and when he opened the door and saw me he just said "sorry m8 i was only yanking your chain didn't mean any of the shit i said".

i used to be kinda intimidating 1.95 and 110Kg's(getting back in the gym as of tonight)

Lol I remember this one guy in on counter strike being an ass. The problem wad we played on a school lan. So one night we found out who it was, grabbed some cricket bats from the first years bags under their beds and paid this guys dorm a visit. Should have seen his eyes when 5 matrics came in his dorn saying "what did you say about my Mom"

Yeah that first look they give you is classic it's one of those "WTF have i gotten me and my my big mouth into. Mommy please help" moments

And @ Cicero my fighting days are over stopped doing kickboxing for almost a year now :(
 
Damn, some bad asses here :p

Majority of the time I don't initiate any form of conflict online outside of trolling. There are times when I'm incredibly bored and my CoD fix doesn't even fix that and I go after guys that you can hear get pissed off easily, that's awesome :D :p. I do love my trolling though. Pissing people off in MP by going ultimate douchebag (Shotgun in a sniper lobby :love:), my mates and I used to grab riot shields, LMG's and shotguns in Black Ops II and we would camp the whole game in one room and lock it down in TDM, man the hatemail we would get :D. I love it when you are clearly camping but then you call the other team a bunch of campers and they fall for the bait, God, it's just awesome :D.

If someone wants to "fuck my mother" I don't get upset and fly into them I will play along and tune him something like "She wasn't impressed with your dick size" etc... Best way combat slurs online.

Haha, I also enjoy a bit of Bf4 trollage. Sometimes I pull dick moves though, get a bit carried away, but still.

C4 camping, airbursting, repair tooling infantry, defib on enemies, and lots of good 'ol t-bagging.
 
I hear what everyone is saying about no one knowing who you are, and there not being any repercussions to things you say online (90% of the time) But for me im not going to change the way i interact with people just because i cant see them... I cant see how someone thats a genuinely nice person would turn into a dick online...
 
I don't think most people online are jerks, its just the jerks are the ones who communicate the most. I think the normal average friendly player doesn't bother talking because of the loud brash jerk.

Also the lack of consequences for acting like being jerk doesn't help. In real life you will be made to look like a fool by your peers. On top of that empathy is a factor, in real life you see your words hurt someone by there reaction, you don't see peoples reactions online.

That's pretty mild behavior. Honestly very little get's to me in BF4, I think it much better balanced than BF3 was.
