Why Do People Hate EA?

JIMQUISITION: Why Do People Hate EA?

Recently, IGN asked EA why people hate EA in an article that seemed designed to dismiss any actual reasons for people hating EA. Hardly surprising, since EA was the one being interviewed about the hate for EA. Looking to set things right and restore balance to the world, Jim Sterling asks Jim Sterling why people hate EA.
The only difficult part in answering the question, "Why do people hate EA?" is deciding where to bloody begin!

...when I think EA I think gobbling up, what a lot I got.

Personally, I would begin with Dungeon Keeper 3

from the dungeon keeper Wikipedia page:
"Dungeon Keeper 3 was not released. However, some Dungeon Keeper 2 CDs contained a trailer showing some features of Dungeon Keeper 3; among them were above-land battles. One member of Bullfrog Productions stated on his personal website that Dungeon Keeper 3 was going to be named War for the Overworld.[4] The project was discontinued because, according to Ernest W. Adams (one of the developers), Bullfrog had decided not to make any other real-time strategy games. The decision was, in effect, the end of Bullfrog as a brand; the company had already been owned by Electronic Arts for several years. EA laid off some employees and put the remainder onto other projects such as the Harry Potter line."

They used the bullfrog people they didn`t fire to make Harry Potter games

When I think EA, I think of EA Sports, e.g. Tiger Woods. Real pity it went console only :/

EA, similar to Activision and Ubisoft take the creative juices that make up smaller companies and churn them in to the money making machine and unfortunately the end result that is spat out is usually part of the mass garbage that is generic gameplay.

What I mean by this is that most FPS games feel similar, with "awesome graphics" and very little actual plot / content to keep one's brain occupied. The slew of NFS games that get churned out, each rendition like a carbon copy of the previous year i.e they get progressively worse, is another nail in the proverbial coffin of EA from the Internet Hate Machine.

The taint that these big gaming houses have on the small guys that they gobble up is pretty bad. Take Rockstar games for example - the only people that hate them are politicians and crybabies over computer game morality. Blizzard is still somewhat independent but you can feel the Activision screws on them - regardless of what they claim. Diablo 3 is case in point and so are the WoW microtransactions - on a game you already pay them monthly for. ArenaNet are doing a fantastic job so far with GW2 and gamers appreciate the fact that some developers make games for the sake of making games which are fun to play. EA is hated because they churn out generic crap.

... generic and incomplete crap, and then charging you extra for the rest of the game.

Could not have said it better myself.

Although I will say, since Criterion came to rescue of NFS the quality of the series has been significantly improved ;). Most Wanted is still the best though :P.

Aquire new IP.

They are consuming the industry.

Consume

Definition: To destroy, as by decomposition, dissipation, waste, or fire; to use up; to expend; to waste; to burn up; to eat up; to devour.

When I think EA I think Activision v2.1.

Same shit, different publisher. I wonder if their director is also a fat, money grubbing hobbit.

LOL!

I know dude...it's bad...but I needed another persistent game to play...Although DICE claimed to operate independently from EA still, even after being acquired by them in 2006, I can see the fat hobbit's influence in all their systems which is sad.

Criterion is awesome, they did a good job with Hot Pursuit. They should be in charge of the NFS series. I just hope they add customization to Most Wanted
