Why do we buy gaming and tech magazines?

Up until two months ago, it had been over a year since I last bought a copy of NAG or PC Format.

I bought a copy of both recently, and having read through most of the content, it occurred to me that I had not learned anything that I could not have simply by following the odd gaming or technology websites, sampling any one of potentially dozens of [sometimes conflicting] reviews online, and reading the opinions of others on sites such as My Gaming-simply by paying my monthly line rental and data fees.

Do you think that there is still a place for paper-based publications dealing with matters of this nature for those of us who are privileged enough to have access to the internet? Do you still buy magazines at a newsagent or bookshop or do you prefer harvesting information from the World Wide Web?

Been very long time since I've gotten myself any of those types mags, no point really since I've gotten myself dsl. Last mag I've been subbed to was WeirdTales and only other one I get from time to time is ImagineFX. No point to buying a news paper imho as they are all about sensationalism. If I really had to pickup a paper go with MG.

I'd rather harvest.

Who's this "we" you speak of?

I frequent MyADSL, Kotaku, MyGaming and GameSpot.

Pfff... "Magazines." You mad.

I haven't touched a PC Format/NAG/whatever since I was probably 14/15 (9 or 10 years ago).

I haven't bought a mag in a while. I'd be one of the people that use to buy regularly, but no longer.

Well I do buy them on occasion , not as frequent as I used to. Because of the review aspect , by going on line you get one opinion but most is a world opinion , these guys give us a SA perspective .Also makes sitting on a plane better when u have some thing you want to read on hand and a host of other situations where you don't want to wip out your mobile (Even thou my DHD has a awesome screen)

there is something about holding a publication and the added bonus of bringing it to your face to see if you can spot the nipples on the new Lara Pic .....

Ahhhh the joys of paper

I've been buying both PCF and NAG every month, for the last 2 years or so.
Since I spent the majority of my day driving to clients (and sometimes waiting for them), they keep me busy when I'm too early for an appointment (which happens quite often).

My sister sometimes brings me the more expensive CG magazines when she comes over from England...

How does reviewing games from a South African perspective differ from how it might be done by someone of another nationality?

Why must I buy one when a) sites like.
Mygaing
PCgamer
Kotaku'
Blue's News
Fudzilla
Toms Hardware
Legit
...Exist

and b) by the time you get it, it's old news.

The smell perhaps. Don't know. Could have bought it for the cover and then got hooked. There was always something interesting in but when they got rid of the models it seems the rest of the content went down the drain as well.

Maybe I'm just too loyal but I keep hoping that a new editor will arrive and bring back the old style that I used to love. I can't believe the new one is selling more and now it seems to be moving in a console direction as well to make up for the loss.

Stopped buying nag when I got the net.

I get the latest news on the day. And nag only gets a it a month later due to the nature of a magazine.

I also used to buy NAG, for about two years, then when I got adsl I haven't bought one since. The problem was I'd already read the reviews and previews etc. online before they came out in the mag. Even the added dvd has been made redundant for me since getting uncapped.

I buy NAG and PCFormat magazines. Lately I have just been buying Nag for the dvd and a couple articles in the magazine and I am impressed with the shootout things that PCFormat do. I don't have uncapped so the stuff on the dvd's usually does come in handy

Still buy PCFormat every month and then when I'm lucky to travel overseas I always by the latest copy of PCGamer.

I use to years ago also buy PCFormat for free CD's and demo games in it, now I just use the internet to download the demo's and get information about games.

Sometimes I buy walkthroughs for my Pokemon games, but not often since I have to order them from USA, cause they don't sell them here unfortunately.

I have bought NAG & PC Format monthly for years now, but come to think of it, apart from one or two interesting discussions every so often, neither provide anything I cannot get off the internet on my own. Never lookat the discs either.

Bam! Revelation time¡ I am wasting my money! :(
