Why most people don't finish video games

or shorter working hours.

The future? Shorter games

So it's come to this: People have less time to play games than they did before. They have more options than ever. And they're more inclined to play quick-hit multiplayer modes, even at the expense of 100-hour epics.

Is that a problem?

Not at all, Fuller says. "They're lucky to find the time to beat a 10-hour game once or twice a month," he says of the average-age gamer. "They don't feel cheated about shorter games and will just play a longer game for as many hours as their schedule allows before moving on to another title.

Steinberg agrees: "Just because you don't slay the final boss or rescue the princess doesn't mean you can't see most of, if not all, of what a game has to offer in the hours leading up to it."

Not only that, but gamers are already warming to the idea of shorter games.

"Completion rates are actually on the rise," Lee says. "Many games now have a 40% to 50% completion rate, thanks to 10-hour campaigns instead of the 20-30 hour ones of yesteryear. Of course, that's good or bad depending on how you look at it. It's better than before. But it still means that more than half of all game content never gets appreciated."

To counter that, Airey says extended play content will increasingly come from expansion packs, a sort of best-of-both-worlds approach.

"We're at a stage now that we're trying to find ways to keep mind share (consumer awareness about a product)," he says. "When the consumer is not playing our game, their friends aren't either. So games will trend toward being shorter and then support the need for 'more' via downloadable content."

No matter, says Casey Willis, an avid gamer from Atlanta. "Make a game worth my time and money, and I'll be happy. After all, 10 hours of awesome is better than 20 hours of boring."

Hahha I fall into that 1 person who finish my games. True story the late game seems to suffer since so many peeps don't finish it so why spend all that money/time into a epic finish.

ps go play bioshock 2 early game is bit boring but the ending is so fking worth it :D

So it's come to this: People have less time to play games than they did before.

Easy, stop watching super duper reality show no. 79

"Completion rates are actually on the rise,"

Deceptive statistic if they make games easier, with not much content or even actual control over your character.

I am in agreement with this thinking.

I've actually been making an effort to go back and finish games that I haven't yet. But it is a losing battle.

I am attempting that, problem is I have to restart 80% of them thanks to a robbery 2 years ago, and the thought of restarting some of them is what's left me with the stalemate. If more games hook me like the Uncharted Series did then wham I'd finish them quickly.

@ czc

I agree. Also so many games have such poor story lines and shallow characters there is no compulsion to find out what the conclusion of the saga is.

On DS related side I finish all my main pokemon games story line. All I have left normally are side line quests and to complete the pokedex.

On PC games I try and also finish the main story then I try and defeat things on a harder difficulty, Starcraft II and Diablo as example.

I almost always finish games I start, though it does mean I don't get to play as many different games. There's only a handful where I got bored of the game and gave up on it. I think the one exception is Darksiders. I got about half way through and then I got ADSL and multiplayer took over my life. I still need to pick that game up again and finish it.

Hmm, surely this can't apply to ALL games? Sometimes there are games that I've wished was a lot longer. Even after I finished them. If a game is really fun to play, it would suck if it's short. Just stop making kuk games :D

Absolutely agree

After all, 10 hours of awesome is better than 20 hours of boring

And 20 hours of awesome > 10 hours of awesome

Remember the days when you were young, finishing games just to see the movies. I remember doing that with the single player campaign in command and conquer and age of empires

It seems to me that everything in the article is conveniently picked to support his hypothesis.

Why use a random 3rd party service like Raptr to track completion rates? Backloggery .... really, a site that is specifically there for people who presumably have problems finishing their games. Is that really a good palce to go for a complete rate discussion? Not to mention it's tiny drop in the ocean with a user base of 54k, hardly enough users to track the completion rate of a single game never mind an extrapolation for the entire industry.

I also consider that ESA gamer age stat to be deceptive because it includes anyone who has ever touched a game and a game can be anything from peggle to solitaire to gears of war. So to say the average age of people who play games is 37 may be correct but it doesn't mean the average 'gamer' age is 37 and by gamer I mean someone who regularly plays AAA games. Not trying to exclude the casual market but the completion rate discussion is really focused around AAA titles.

Also he only puts forward ONE example... ONE ... and that example is probably the worst possible example you could pick when you talking about completion rates. An open world sandbox game, the absolutely most notorious game type to actually finish. Sure maybe only 10% of the people on Raptr finished the game but taking the total game time and game followers you still get an average playtime of 17hrs per person.

How about we look at a more relevant example, Mass Effect 2, with stats given by the developers i.e not some extrapolation but the actual figures from every person who played ME2.

media

50% completion rate at an average play-through of 33hrs.

Note though that I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with what has been said, merely stating that what has been written is a nice little story not a worthy analysis of the gaming industry.

@MOnk, you want to see some completionists, have a look at http://www.playfire.com/

Those guys are all about not only finishing a game, but getting every single achievement (platinum) as well.

Just to prove my point, I just went there, and the very first thing I read is someone posted this about AC:BH
Platinum #45: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

  • You lucky bastards. I'm currently working on it. There is two territories that it won't let me get. There is no missions or anything near it and I've already beat the game. I need those two areas to get 100% for the area.

Both open world sandbox games

hehehehe yeah it has always been like that over on PF. Have been a member for about a year and a half now, those guys are just talking about "platting games". The biggest group on the site was called "Trophy Whores" before the groups were shut down.

Another interesting thing to check out while you are there are peoples profiles. They rank achievements in scarcity (they compare the achievements of all playfire members and determine the scarcity by see which achievement has been obtained by the least amount of members), and some of these guys go out of their way to finish games and obtain rare achievements.

@matt

I'm confused, are you agreeing or disagreeing with me? :)

LOL, I'm agreeing with you dude. The article is very one sided and just looking at the people who don't finish games. But there are plenty people who go all out to finish games. You were saying that the examples he gives are things like Backloggery, so I'm showing the flip side to prove your point.

I generally finish almost all my games, however I don't always finish reading silly articles

So you guys know what I'm talking about then. That's a seriously obsessive bunch of people over there
