Why taking SimCity offline was so complicated

They don't have to apologize - they already have your money.
I almost bought the game with all its flaws, but luckily didn't, and now? Now I don't even think about the game anymore...they've definitely lost my money, which they would have gotten if they listened earlier.

I think most people that haven't bought it yet feels the same.
I was as excited as the next guy as the release date approached. I even considered a pre-order for the first time in my life. Luckily, I didn't.
Now? The hype is over and forever more, when I think of Simcity 5, I will see an over-hyped, bungled release regardless of how good (or bad) the final patched product turns out.

Going back to a previous article, I quote MyGaming:

Bringing the game Offline means big things for our wonderful community of Modders. They can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game. Modding is a big part of our studio’s legacy and we’re excited to see what you guys create.

Why don't developers realize that the freedom and publicity that mods create for communities and not only longevity to a series or game but pulls in new adopters plenty faster than DLC?

Because when you don't allow mods it means you are in direct control of the lifespan of the game. Compare BF2 to BF3. One still has a thriving community playing the game with all manner of mods, the other is more or less deserted.

I agree , mods can make an old game very interesting, look at minecraft, elder scrolls ext.
