A recent system update from Nintendo adds a bunch of new features to Wii U, including the ability to output Wii games on the GamePad.

It's important to emphasize that Wii games displayed on the GamePad still require a Wii remote (and nunchuck attachment) in order to play. Here's a quick list of other features included in this update:

The ability to automatically receive recommended demos and software using SpotPass.
The ability to disable Nintendo ID use via smartphone or web browser
USB keyboard support
A dedicated friend list icon on the Wii U Menu
Support for Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound when playing Wii software
Users can chat via a headset plugged into the GamePad (for Wii U Chat)
Internet Browser improvements
Overall system stability improvements

So you can use your gamepad as a mini screen while still having to use the wiimote... :/

Yeah, hopefully they will edit that out with time :) If the game doesn't require the IR from the wii-mote it should be playable on the gamepad.

I think what they have going at the moment is something of a direct emulation of Wii. They would have to write in some adaption code or something... Dunno if Nintendo would do that.
