Will a Kinect bought in Hong Kong work in SA?

Hi there,

I am travelling to Hong Kong and want to pick up a Kinect (it's about R1200 with 2 games) and just wanted to make sure it would work with my console? It's the new generation 250gb. I know it works on USB, but I just wanted to make sure. I am also not sure the games will work, because I know that some are region specific?

Thanks in advance.

Well no one has ever mentioned anything about taking one home and having issues after buying it in another country. But considering it is bought in Wrong Kong, my best suggestion would be to buy yourself a universal plug though. :)

I doubt that hardware will cause any issues when changing region. Your games might have an issue if you buy them over there. It is a good deal for the device, but like I said, the games might be your only problem. If you want to know more about this, I suggest you use the "Contact Us" feature on http://www.xbox.com/support and ask them directly. They respond within one day and never have an issue helping you out.

I've read that Kinect itself should be usable with your console. The catch is the power adapter since HK power supply units aren't necessarily the same with the South African one. Be sure to check that as you might need to get a transformer or something.

Good point. If you need a power adapter, you can try to get one over there. Or try New World over here in SA, they have all sorts of international power adapters at fairly decent prices.

EDIT: Link to New World's website

Ok, I hate to double post, but I have an answer for you.

Are Kinect games region-free?

While Kinect doesn’t have a region code, the Xbox 360 console is designed to work only with game discs that are sold in the same region as the console.

For example, North American game discs only work with North American Xbox consoles. Similarly, Japanese game discs only work with Japanese Xbox consoles, and European game discs only work with European Xbox consoles.

The following regions use the corresponding game encoding standards:

North America and South America (United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil): NTSC
Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan): NTSC-J – Available from Play-Asia.com
Europe, South Africa, India, Australia, and New Zealand: PAL

So the Kinect will work, but the games will unfortunately not.

A friend of mine went to Dubai last year and I had him bring back a Kinect for me (it was a bit cheaper over there). It works like a charm, but I just had to buy a travel adapter for the Kinect's plug. Then again, if you have a new shape XBOX, the Kinect draws its power from the console (which used the same plug worldwide).
