Will LAN's be a thing of the past?

With so many AAA titles coming out with no LAN support i wonder will LAN's be a thing of the past in the not to different future.
Look at these games that have said there will be no lan support and these are multiplayer games
CODMW2
BATTLEFIELD BAD COMPANY 2
STARCRAFT

Almost feel like shedding a tear

Not all AAA games are played at general lans, yes the big lans like Mayhem would certainly have a large number of people wanting to play the new titles

But theres still a rather big CS/COD/Dota community :)

Well speculations are that the new COD will be bringing back Dedicated servers as well as Lan support and MW2 does have Lan support but as you are already aware, you need connectivity in order to play Lan with your mates. People will also find ways of hacking and cracking games in order to be able to play the lan functionality that come with them. :)

In HoN you gonna have to login before your able to LAN. Looks like that's the way things are headed unfortunately.

I can understand why they're forcing users to log in via the internet when they want to use the LAN feature because LAN's are THE events to pirate anything and everything. What I cannot understand is why they've started removing system link support for consoles as well like the XBOX 360. Forza 2 had a great system link feature, but Forza 3 implemented this overly complicated "do it via XBOX Live" system that makes no sense.

I suppose what Microsoft is trying to do is to stop any gamer from playing with his/her friends without paying M$ money in terms of "Gold" membership fees. I think developers and publishers have decided that being able to play with friends is no longer a right, but a commodity which can be exploited.

I must agree with Neo. Almost every single LAN I used to attend, people would pirate software/games etc to death as if it was okay to do so. Now people want to know why LAN features are disappearing.

I agree to an extent, LAN's will always be there tho as our internet is actually getting better, soon there will be internet access at all lans, take a look at the langames one that already has. Its just a matter of time before all lans do,

Problem with most LANs in general is that the majority just sit around playing CS, COD and DOTA. Well that and all the piracy *cough* I mean, "file sharing" going on at LANs.

Perhaps I've just outgrown the whole "lanning scene", because I honestly don't see the appeal anymore.

As long as rAge exists, there will always be a LAN worth going to :)
(its the only one I go to)

I am sure other big LANs compare (MPLD, Carnage, OC ... sorry don't know names). but like I said, I only go to rAge.

LAN's are great fro competition and for jamming with friends have having a great time, they are definitely a big win, much more social and good laughs at a LAN than just jamming through the net.
I really hope they don't disappear, i think the only thing that would make developers keep on supporting LANs is the competition side of things not so much the fun and social side.

last "lan" i went to here in town was more a copy fest than anything else. when people eventually played something it was this crappy title called sniper elite...

That what irritate me most about most big LANs(read liberty) I go to play with my friends. If I just wanted to play i would play at home or online. Thus I go to evolution LAN(its this weekend) to go play with all my friends witch don't have internet.

I think LANs is a thing of the past for me. The internet will be so cheap one of these days that it will be cheaper to just get an internet connection and when you want to jam with friend just invite them over at home. CS/DOTA/COD4 must die some time. I mean it can't just go on for like 10 -20 years.

I would like some more games to have some support. maybe they should make certain websites accessible at line just to log into a specific games online service to play on LAN. Still for me I'll rather download stuff with my 4mb uncapped account than to carry my pc arround.

I also feel like gaming in general is dieing. The titles keeps on getting worse by the moment and there are not enough online servers for different games. Most of the games I have played the past months I just install it play for like 5min and then quit and never play it again. I think people are running out of ideas. Same goes for movies.

LAN's will stay. Private and Public LAN's.

It's always fun to go to a private LAN. It's just part of being a geek/gamer/nerd/avid computer user.

Lan will probaly stay think about the people who cant afford internet, that gives me a broken heart.
