I'm gonna be kinda mainstream here and say :

Entry: Batman (A.K.A Bruce Wayne)

batman_arkham_city_1.jpg

Having loved the Dark Knight Trilogy, I decided to play Arkham City recently (super delayed I know), not expecting too much. Was I wrong! I'm usually all for gameplay, but the characters in the game blew me away! The dark knight himself was exactly as I envisioned him. Supremely confident , supremely intimidating. When he walked into the room, he was immediately the only assured guy in the room. He just had that about him. When he talked, you listened. Simple as that.

But you could never call him arrogant, because you could sense his hurt and pain in everything he did. You *felt* all the feelings he was holding back, all the anger, rage and guilt. You saw past that immovable expression behind that mask. You got the feeling that the only reason he dispatched all those enemies with such ease was because he fought much harder battles with himself everyday.

Entry: Jebediah Kerman

To boldly go where no Kerbal has gone before is the motto of this young little trooper. Jebediah (or Jeb for short) is the type of brave that songs are written about. With a smile on his face, he climbs into any rocket or space plane. The dangers of space flight doesn't seem to phase him. The stresses of G-force is what keeps him alive.

One can call him a real universal traveller, as he's been to the Mun and back. He's seen the stars. He's walked the desolate wastelands of distant planets and lived to tell the tale. He has taken more pictures of the planets than National Geographic can show. He has orbited his home planet of Kerbal more times than the Sun.

Sure, not all the missions he has flown has been a resounding success, and many a space agency has left him on the Mun to die (including me unfortunately). Yet his smile never dissipates.

His skill level is legendary, to the extent that the community tried to replicate his amazing talent in a mechanical device, called MechJeb. But no number of computers or actuators can replace Jeb's experience.

Not only is this lovable green character an accomplished astronaut, he is also a keen business man. Seeing the opportunity in the renewed interest in space flight, Jab opened up various businesses building the various parts that many space agencies have used.

A keen business man...
A friendly face in the toughest situations...
A master of space flight and engineering...

Jebediah Kerman is indeed synonymous with any Kerbals space program.

Rust Guy

The_rock_being_held..jpg

Few characters can grasp a person like Rust guy while still hiding his identity from the world. Thousands of people have seen him, running naked through fields holding his trusty rock & chasing boars, but no one knows him for who he really is.

I have become attached to Rust guy, his expertise with a simple Rock is unmatched by even the greatest stone smith, he is able to fillet chicken breasts from nearly any animal, harvest lumber and chemical grade ores with this simple piece of earth. Wolves, bears or mutated humans, nothing can rival Rust guys close quarter combat skills.

As you spend more time with him, you begin to feel his power, his monotone face remains emotionless, no matter if you're beating down a tree or smashing a sleeping guy in the cheek so you can gather another rock and a half burnt out torch. His cold behavior invokes a sense of evil in yourself you never thought was there.

I have grown to love Rust guy, and I feel like he loves me back, but i know he will never tell me this, but I must still believe.

Ellie (from The Last of Us)

This game and its characters has impacted me in a way that no other game has before.

The most significant character in any game I have played in my life was Ellie. This teenage girl is, at the beginning of the game, vulnerable, defenseless and an orphan. You are charged with protecting this her and delivering her to the Fireflies, a rebellion faction. As you progress through the game, you start to care for this girl. You see what she has missed out on as a teenage girl living in a post apocalyptic world where she has and will never have the opportunity to play with dolls of have sleep overs or worry about boys. Her impromptu monologues and quirks just help to establish her character and gives you little glimpses into how she sees the world. She is an absolutely lovable character. It was about halfway through the game where I came to the realization that I really care for this girl and her safety. I felt very protective over her and I found myself thinking of what will happen next in the game and what is ahead of us in our journey, even while at work. I felt like a father figure/protector for her and it was a strange feeling for me knowing that this is just a character in the game. The main character Joel lost his daughter and this helped establish in me the sense of loss that lead to me being overly protective over Ellie. It filled me with pride at times seeing her character develop into a young lady that can hold her own in the midst of conflict and I was at times genuinely fearful of her life when she was abducted and had her life threatened. When I had to save her knowing that she was in imminent danger, I felt an urgency to get to her and wipe out any and everyone that stood in my way. I felt emotions I have never felt before and it was all because this fictional teenage girl made me feel it.

This game still makes me emotional when I think of certain key scenes in the game. It impacted me so much that I have a figurine of the man characters and it constantly reminds me of their journey. I will be replaying the game after I played the DLC soon just to revisit the world and it's characters. Ellie is and will stay, in my opinion, the best written and fleshed out character in gaming history and she will crawl into your heart the moment you spend some time with her. It will freak you out and you will love every moment of it. :)

Here's a pic of the figurine I have. It is my preciousssss. ;)

John Marston from Red Dead Redemption

The guy is just pure cool. A masterful and experienced gunman, marksman, rider and hunter. Marston is a rugged survivalist and knows life as a fight for survival. His politeness and nonchalance belies how deadly he can be. He is the type of character that you wish really existed once or someone that you would really want to be like. He is a completely unfazed character, nothing gets to him. So much so that you'd almost think he is too lazy or beaten down to actually give a damn. But he is never down, never beat. Even in the harshest situations his dry, witty chirps let you know he has the skills to deal.......and even he cant, well, he is ok with that.

BOT Troy OP

Entry: BOT Troy from CS:GO

16469.jpg

Being the definition of OP. BOT Troy is considered to be the "most full" CS:GO bot Valve ever created. His dedication to improving his game and love for his fans can be seen by his daily streams on Twitch. Troy shows his awe-inspiring spirit on the map by being the friendliest of players, always taking care of the team before himself. However perfect his aim might be, he is still the most modest BOT you will ever come across, never leaving snarky remarks or boasting about himself or his team.

Troy can often be seen chasing chickens around the map on de_mirage or playing soccer on de_crown. Whatever he is doing at the time, you can be rest assured he's playing at his best and will always have a place in our hearts.

Long live BOT Troy!

Entry: Kimble "Irish" Graves

As with all big release fps title's there is one guy, only one, who just does not obey the rules and does what he thinks to be right. In Battlefield 4, Irish is this man. Irish makes it possible to be a bad ass soldier in a fps game and to still keep some sliver of humility alive inside.

Irish will not let you down, he always has your back in the most intense moments and can sure as hell kill people.
he does not just trust people, even his superiors. And as he says, "Where I come from trust is earned".

When confronted with hundreds of refugees, he yells to everyone telling them to come with him to safety, knowing that he should not, but he still remains human.

You cannot argue with someone who can feel the pain of civilians trapped in the middle of a war, but will not hesitate to kill people who threaten those around him.

Overall a true humble man and soldier.

Solid Snake

Solid-Snake-600x325.jpg

If you look up “badass” in the dictionary, one of the definitions is probably Solid Snake. Possessing an IQ of 180 and fluent in six different languages, he was known as "the man who makes the impossible possible" and his exploits made him into a living legend among the military black ops.

I remember booting up Metal Gear Solid 1 back in the day and was utterly blown away by this game. The never-before-seen cinematic presentation in a videogame, the depth of the characters and at the time awesome and unrivalled stealth mechanics and gameplay made this game an instant favourite.

He is sneaky, painfully serious, and the most elite of special agents, complete with natty headband, 'stache, snaking suit, eye-patch and everything - superbly voiced by gravel-tongued voice-actor and X-Men screenwriter, David Hayter.

However, there are many layers to him and as you progress through the series of games you strangely can relate to him. Despite his ruthless efficiency as a killer, he has not lost perspective on the innate immorality of violence, making him one of the more respectable video game heroes out there. As of now, I'm playing metal gear solid 2 so his character and overall story has yet to unfold.

Special attention should be given to Snake as a nomination. There is one thing he does above all others: He can swiftly whip out a cardboard box, hide in it, and remain unnoticed despite the fact that he's wiggling slowly across a room! :D

THEBOX.jpg

Forget sniping, backflipping, or crawling through air ducts... waddling across a room inside a box, now that's what black ops are all about! :D

Some memorable quotes..

"I'm no hero. Never was - Just an old killer, hired to do some wetwork."

"I'll die after I kill you."

SNAAAAAAAAAAKE!? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!

Entry: Lara Croft (Tomb Raider franchise)

It's no secret that I love Lara Croft. In fact, if you asked anyone that knows me to name one thing about me, this may be the first thing that comes to their minds. You could call me obsessed. Never has a fictional character taken my heart like Lara has. Tomb Raider was the reason I moved from casual gamer to gaming enthusiast. The first game captivated my imagination like no other before it.

-keep-calm-and-love-lara-croft.jpg

Despite the fact that she's fearless, highly intelligent (fluent in several languages!) strong and independent, she also possesses huge...

Confidence (in addition to the memorable feature I'm sure most of you were thinking about instead :p). Lara is the type of person anyone would do well in striving to be more like.

Of course her natural beauty and ability to kick some serious ass is a huge draw too. I love that she doesn't need a man. She works alone. Her goals are never about finding "happily-ever-after". She has the courage to go for what she wants, regardless of the many near-death consequences. Her intelligence, witty charisma and drive to discover more about the ancient worlds of yesteryear are what sets her apart from most of the stereotypically "sexy" ladies of gaming. She paved the way for stronger female leads in gaming. She has a heart behind that big chest, and that I believe is the reason she is still stealing the hearts of gamers nearly 20 years after her triangular breasts first graced our screens. Most thankfully, technology has allowed for her to become a much more believable icon.

Lara Croft has gone to places no video-game character had gone before, and no, I'm not referring to her many globe-trotting adventures. She currently holds the Guiness World Record for "most recognized female video game character" and has a star on the Walk of Game in San Francisco, and with good reason. She had an undeniable effect on pop culture. Chances are, your grandmother knows who Lara Croft is. She graced the covers of many fashion magazines completely unrelated to videogames, most notably 'The Face', and at the time her appearance on this cover was credited with changing the perception of video games from "geeky" to mainstream. The same could be said for Angelina Jolie. Before her debut as the life-action Lara Croft, she was a relatively unknown actress to the general public. The highly successful first film proved that video-game adaptations could make bucket loads at the box office, a feat which has been hard to match since its release, with the only film knocking it to second place on the list of highest-grossing video game movies being 2010's Prince of Persia film. It is probably the role most people associate with AJ, despite her very successful career as an action heroine that followed. Lara's digital presence even joined U2 on their 1997 PopMart tour. And I'm sure all of you remember the many Lucozade television adverts that featured Lara Croft, not to mention the many other adverts for brands such as VISA and SEAT cars.

I think I’ve said enough to cement the fact that Lara has a huge following and legacy behind her. She is a brand on her own. 2013’s reboot only proved that nearly 20 years on, Lara Croft is here to stay. I look forward to many more exciting adventures controlling her, and (embarrassingly), perhaps even the possibility of BEING her through the exciting future of Virtual Reality. Lara Croft is a character like no other, and will forever be my Character of the Moment. But then, given everything I’ve just told you, I’m sure you will agree she has been the character of many moments, and will continue to be in the years ahead.

Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins

Morrigan.PNG

Ah Morrigan. The sexy and sassy witch of the wild.
From your first appearance to your unexpected departure, you have never ceased to capture my attention.

Armed with a razor-sharp tongue, she is not afraid to speak her mind.
Couple that along with a few hand gestures, she is capable of tearing apart her foes. Literally.
Definitely my favourite companion to keep me entertained - no sexual innuendo intended - on lengthy journeys.
That is, until her unexpected departure when I needed her the most.

The events of the night before her departure left me wondering about all my previous choices.
Was it worth it? Would it have turned out different if I didn't misread some of the dialogue options?
Unfortunately, I would never find out. There are too many different choice routes to the game.

However, there is one that I do know. I know that she is still out there, and I want to find her.
Be it in the form of DLC, expansions or crappy sequels.
I will keep looking for Morrigan every chance I get!

-extra content-
Going back to the entertainment part, Morrigan is also a shape shifter.
You know, if you are ever into that sort of thing. "whistling:

Entry: Liquid Snake

Liquid_Snake.jpg

I have to admit: I’ve always liked villains to some degree due to their complexity. Liquid Snake is among the most intriguing villains, as he is very likely the first highly intelligent boss that I ever fought in a game.

Liquid was a genetically engineered clone of a legendary man named Big Boss, who was regarded as the greatest soldier who ever lived. He was the twin brother of Solid Snake, and was motivated by a deep jealousy as he believed that he was the inferior clone, and that Solid received all of Big Boss’s superior genes.

Despite the US government’s attempts in Metal Gear Solid to get Solid Snake on Shadow Moses Island and create a diversion to take attention away from his arrival, Liquid knew that Snake was coming, and he was more than prepared – so much so that he even completely fooled Snake and the rest of the mission support staff, posing as one of his oldest friends and mentor, Master McDonell Miller, communicating with him via his codec, even managing to mask his British accent to some degree. In doing this he was able to influence Snake into completing various objectives that he and his band of terrorists had failed to do themselves, chiefly activating Metal Gear REX, the next step in warfare – a mobile weapons platform that was designed to be absolutely unstoppable. It took some time for Snake to realise that it was indeed Liquid masquerading as Master and that he had killed the real Master and assumed his identity. This goes down in history as one of the biggest surprises and plot twists in gaming.

When not communicating with Snake disguised as Master, he would occasionally appear in person, often wearing just a trench coat over which his long blond locks spilled over, some army pants, fingerless gloves and boots, or even just going without the trench coat completely, with just his old dog tags swaying from side to side around his neck as he moved – even though he was in below freezing temperatures. These visits were made that much more creepy due to the fact that Liquid looks almost exactly like Snake.

Sometimes he just spoke, toyed with Snake, and other times he engaged Snake in battle. But constantly he would observe Snake, study him, and he didn't interfere in the battles Snake had with the other rogue members of FOXHOUND – not even when they were defeated and on the brink of death. He considered them expendable.

Liquid wasn’t your typical brute of a villain. He wasn’t particularly tall or heavily built. In appearance he was a mere man, but underneath the surface lurked a sociopathic mastermind with an IQ at genius level. He was a cold, calculating opponent who was always two steps ahead of his adversaries, nonchalant in manner – not many things phased him too much, extremely confident and very capable. He was not only a master of disguise, but was fluent in several languages, well-versed in hand to hand combat, a more than decent marksman and could pilot the most sophisticated vehicles, including helicopters (he shot down two F-16 fighter jets with one), and even Metal Gear REX itself.

Liquid also showed incredible tenacity and endurance in the way that he survived a fall from the top of REX, which stood three or four stories high – a fall that would have certainly killed a normal person or at least greatly injured them. That and he survived a helicopter crash and a car crash as well. He was most definitely a relentless and remorseless killer; unpredictable and never one to be taken anything less than seriously.

So powerful was Liquid’s will, his influence, that even in death, defeated by the FOXDIE virus, he was still able to haunt his brother – even beyond the realm of Snake’s mind; his memories and his nightmares. Revolver Ocelot became possessed by Liquid after taking one of Liquid’s arms and transplanting it on to his body after Ocelot’s own hand was severed by Gray Fox in MGS.

I’ve personally wanted a Metal Gear Liquid game for many years, as I think it would be very interesting to find out more about how his character developed. Very rarely does a character, let alone a villain, appear in only one game and yet is hailed as being one of the most memorable characters, helping to create one of the greatest and longest enduring feuds of all time.
