ScrapTank (Android)

Modern android arcade action!!

As of late I have been looking for a game that would catch my attention but not for hours on end. You know...you get a short break from everything and need a distraction. I present to you: Scraptank! , which is far from a scrappy game.

This side scroller is reminiscent of arcade games of old. As I make my way through the levels im deciding whether to use my powerup or save it for the boss. Alas I die before I reach the boss...damn. Gotta start the level again, buy my power ups again if ive used them also. You guessed it, this game is not soo easy hence the old arcade analogy. Im distracted now....back to Scraptank!!

Entry: Loadout

Described as "a Looney Tunes cartoon directed by Quentin Tarantino", this fast paced third person shooter is an absolute MUST PLAY for anyone who misses the good old days of arena shooters, like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena. The biggest focus of the game, as the name implies, is weapon customization. With all the available weapon parts you can literally create thousands of weapon combinations, ranging from a basic assault rifle to a rocket launcher that throws timed sticky bombs at your opponents, to a pulse rifle that heals your team mates. There aren't any classes in this game, you basically make your own class with whatever weapon load-out you prefer.

Add to that some very quirky humor, great animation and four very enjoyable team based game modes and you have a winner.

Game modes:

Blitz: You have to capture a control point.
Death Snatch:
Similar team deathmatch but you have to pick up the Blutonium vials your opponent drops for the kill to count.
Extractor:
A random team member is assigned who has to collect Blutonium scattered around the level and take it to a grinder.
Jackhammer:
Similar to CTF, but the "Flag" is a very powerful hammer that kills enemies instantly.

And the best part? It's free-to-play. No, not free-to-pay, or pay-to-play, or even pay-to-win. In fact, it's impossible to buy weapon parts with anything other than the in-game currency (Blutes), which you earn by simply playing the game. The only things you can buy with real money in this game, are cosmetic items like clothing, hair styles and taunts, so that you can stand out from all the other players.

I highly recommend you give this a try. You have nothing to lose here.

Loadout:

I'm a fat, let-it-all-hangout lady named Helga, sprinting over dusty-red rockfaces and I'm on a mission. My team's Jackhammer (a brutal "hammer of Thor" kind of weapon) has been taken and is sitting at the enemies base. Luckily, we've got their hammer too and it's at our base. The scores are level and time is nearly up. I'm on a mission.

My powerful legs propel me over a bottomless chasm in a gravity-defying leap. I'm nearly at the enemy base, waiting for me is the thief and he's carrying a weapon that could pop me open like a pinata in one mighty hit, the Jackhammer. I need to be quick, stocky legs don't fail me now!
I charge in, my custom-built rifle spews out hot lead at an alarming rate (thanks to my nifty light assault barrell), my foe turns to towards me and leaps, intent on bringing the hammer down on my plump body. I wait a split second and jump, just missing the blast zone of the hammer as it slams into the ground. I'm still alive! No time for celebrations though, I try to keep my gun on him, whittling away his health but not for long, the hammer comes swinging down again. Shit, shit, shit! I dive left, right, left again. Each time barely escaping the orb of death the hammer releases on each ground-pound. Never has a woman of such girth been so agile when free food was NOT involved. I need to end this now.

Too late! I see the red nametag of an enemy pop over the hill. I've got company, and he's firing rockets in my direction. I keep diving around, shooting blindly until... sweet relief! A wild ally suddenly appears bringing some serious fire-power. His bullets set the hammer carrier alight, he stumbles to the ground, roasted. I see a glorious sight, the Jackhammer, standing shining before me. With rockets still flying at me and my ally now a smear of gore across the rocks I make one desperate lunge...

Your hammer has been returned

Your team has captured the enemy's hammer

"Yes!" I cry just as a rocket connects with my body, leaving only a pair of stocky legs standing.

Game: Outlast (PS4)

Okay, I played the first section till where you get the first trophy. The game is very atmospheric and the heavy breathing is done very well. It does give you a good skrik but the worst part is when these mofos start chasing you. I hope I get a gun somewhere down the line as I want to blast the faces of these scary donners.

How long is this game? I don't think I will be able to play it in more than a few 30 mins spells at a time.

I actually don't know why the **** I am playing this as I hate horror movies.

Game: Flappy Bird

Being addicted to Candy Crush, and seeing various reports around the web including fan made Vine videos about the game, I thought I should try the very silly titled Flappy Bird.

I should never have downloaded this game.

It's premise is really simple, guide the flappy bird through green pipes at the top and bottom of the screen. You do this by tapping the screen of your touchscreen device. Every time you tap the screen, the bird flaps it's pixelated wings moving up slightly.

After 30 minutes of utter infuriation, I had managed a high score of 7. Most of the time I got the bird through 1 opening.

What's worse is that the the bird looks like he's missing a few brain cells, and every time you crash you hear a slapping sound. It makes for a wonderful combination of watching this poor bird getting slapped by green mario pipes.

I don't know why but I can't stop playing this game.

Warning for those that have not played the game, my entry may contain what some might feel are small spoilers:

Entry: TOMB RAIDER (PS3 2013)

My journey with Lara Croft began way back in 1999, but our relationship had been rocky the last few years. I stuck around, because I truly loved her and hoped that she would change her ways. March 2013, that all changed when Lara revitalized my feelings for her with TOMB RAIDER. She finally gave me everything I'd begged for, asked for, to save my love for her.

Apart from updating her looks to appeal to the modern man (or woman), she took me on a tough, gut-wrenching journey, and allowed me to see the world through her eyes, in turn opening my eyes to how she became the hardened woman she is today. Stranded on a stormy island shrouded in mystery, with no escape in sight, our journey takes us from the island's beach, littered with the wrecks of those that became trapped here before us, all the way to the top of its snowy mountains and then down below to it's blood-drenched caves. Lara showed me her strength on more than one occasion, renewing my feelings for her in the process. This adventure was far above and beyond anything she'd shown me in the past, updated for the modern adventurer, and we spent many hours together uncovering the island's many treasures and mysteries, before finally managing to escape the cursed island. To quote Lara Croft herself (from our adventure "TR: Legend" in 2006), "I'm falling in love all over again".

I look forward to our future adventures together with great anticipation, and encourage anyone who may be on the fence still: allow Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, to capture your heart too.

Game Name : RAGE

What do you get when two of the biggest studios in gaming team up ?
When you combine the rich heritage of id Software (Doom/Quake) with the powerhouse production values of Bethesda Studios (Fallout/Skyrim) ?
When you have a game that's a dollop of Borderlands, a sprinkle of Fallout and a dash of the old Quake snappness thrown in?

Well, if the user reviews on Metacritic are to be believed, you get a game with an average score of under 5! :wtf: Fortunately, the haters and trolls of the internet are in-bred rednecks and overall morons! Please do not let their self-rightous vitriol misguide you! RAGE is actually quite a superb shooter, with a few token RPG elements. My "moment " came after playing the game for about 30 minutes. I kept waiting for the "ohhh, so this is why they hate the game" moment. It never came! It was then that I realized what a magnificently underrated gem this game is.

For a start, it looks fantastic! Lighting and water (especially the water) glisten and glide off your screen respectively. The colour palette of a Post Apocalyptic World never looked as crisp and tight as it does in Rage. Add to that the buttery smooth controls and movement, along with the perfectly weighted weapons, and you have one of the finest FPS games available for purchase. Not content with simply being a vanilla run-n-gun shooter, the game neatly mixes in driving elements, along with some crafting and weapon modding.

I could go on singing the praises of RAGE (did i mention the fantastic voice acting and the crisp interface?), but i think that you owe it to yourself to try it out. I promise, you will not be disappointed :D

Crusader kings 2

This game has been consuming me for the past week or so. Took me a while to get the hang of it and what all the buttons do,but now Europe is mine to control. I am busy trying to set up the holy roman empire my first king has mild success he managed to take a fair amount of land from the dukes who opposed him a year into the game. I then declared de jure claim to Italy noticing they are in civil war during that war my king died in bed and his son took over and completed his fathers actions. A few months later nobles are trying to get me to do an elective crown and I would not let them black mail me and germany and Italy was in civil war I had to hire mercenaries and borrow money from the jews to pay for the mercenaries.

After the civil war was ended the victor being me I executed the nobles that where involved. Didn't go down to well with the nobles but I held a fest and everything was fine again. Then I got a message from the nobles in the newly created france and I was declared the king of france but my half brother had none of that and started a civil war in france I surrended my troops were exhausted from the previous war. After a few months my half brother decided I would be the heir of france so now I need to plot his assassination.

All of this excitement while trying to get my daughters and sons married into royal house so I can lay claim to their kingdoms.
Spain isn't looking healthy the moores have taken most of it byzantine empire is crumbling the english has been in civil war for 50 years now and the pope is hassling me about marrying off my daughter to him.

All in all this game is really addictive, nothing beats seeing your plans come to pass. It has one incredible feature you can export your saved game to Europa 4 and carry on with your bloodline.

Rome Total war

This was one of those game I installed back in school to pass some time over the weekends, it's a strategy game after all so I can quit at the end of the battle. I was so very very wrong. It started off easily enough, I'll take over this settlement, which then was followed by town behind it until I was chasing the Gauls out of Europe. Then I figured I would cross the ocean to take over Greece, once I set up there I couldn't leave by barracks idle so it's time to build a legion to take over Carthage. Next thing I know I'm expanding on 2 wings, might as well continue west in Spain now that Gaul is mine.

That's how it started until it snowballed into me having a battle on every turn on some corner, I can't stop half way through a siege, I need to finish this or I might lose track of my conquests. There was always something on the next turn waiting for me, it was impossible to stop. Thankfully I had relaxed privileges in the evening, so while my roommate was slaying math problems I was sending armies into Briton to fight the druids, chasing rebels off my trading routes and defending my new borders in Egypt.

However I fear my teachers and the enemies of Rome formed an alliance. My homework privileges where removed and my conquests moved from a daily check in to Sunday conquests on a smaller scale. To this day there has never been a game that has swallowed me so into it's world. It was truly an amazing game where every turn brought in new challenges and constantly had me reviewing my plans for conquest. There was never a moment where I could sit back and wait for I always had an Army to fight or a Town to take over. It was a game where you made your own narrative and so my choices set how my enemies fought me, it was a game tailored to me which was special and addictive.

To this day Rome sits on my shelf, tempting me to re-enter its world and forget what's real, it stays there to remind me to take a break and get outside or risk another addiction.

Warframe:

It's difficult to put it in words why I love warframe but I will try.

It is the movement of the characters as they flow from one animation into another as run across walls and do stylish attacks. It is the satisfying feeling you get as your enemies crumbles before your attacks. It is how well different frames and powers work together while you are cheering each other on over Team speak. It's is the way you can customize almost everything to suit the way you want to play and the way you can improve them by levelling and polarizing them. It is the game play elements that have been masterly crafted together into a symphony that calls you to play just one more mission over and over again.

Then there is the satisfaction to reach wave 60 in a defence run with friends, a lot of shouting and even swearing . . .

60waves.jpg

And then there is the clan logo - who doesn't want run around with a Grim Wolf on their shoulder!

And then there is this:

Almost 400 hours in and I am still not bored . . .

Guild Wars 2

On the 28th of August 2012 my life ended when I bought this game.

The reason that I bought this game back then was because I had never tried MMO genre games and I was interested in finding out what all the fuss was about.

I immediately fell in love with this game, its something that I can truly say that I enjoy to this day.

The community is friendly and there are always players who are willing to help you get out of a sticky situation.

Like I said above, I started playing back in 2012 when the game launched and even with all the issues that it had on launch it is to this day probably the game that I've enjoyed most in my gaming life (Journey comes in a close second).

The characters, the environments, the events and the guilds are all what truly make this a great game.

Finding or creating your own little guild is one of the best parts. Just getting a couple friends together and playing all night or even weekend long.

There have been numerous times where I wouldn't even notice time passing until the sun came up the next morning.

The game is always getting new content, events, rewards, equipment and features.

Nothing beats the satisfaction of defeating a boss or conquering a world with 1000+ other players all working together, it can't be explained, it has to be felt.

You get sucked into this world. Seeing areas that you've called home destroyed is heartbreaking, anyone who has seen the latest content will know what I mean when I say that I was extremely sad to see Lions Arch destroyed like that.

If you've never tried this game, go out and grab yourself a copy.

You'll thank me for it later.

Star Trek Online
I read the many reviews and I thought I would only being doing a disservice to myself by not trying it (I mean it's 'mostly' free, right?).
- I registered - it failed and did not send me a confirmation e-mail.
- I contacted support and told them THE FULLY story.
- Support replied with a generic 'we have no records of your account registration - try again'
- I replied again with screen shots (and duplicated info that I'd logged with them initially) telling them that is said I already existed.
- Three days passed and then they acknowledged an error was encountered during my account creation and that they'd fixed it (well the weekend was long gone).

Not my game of choice - at least so far with all of the effort required (I sent them a detailed document with all of the steps that I had tried including screen-shots - takes a lot from a lazy bugger like me).

Anyway I finally got it downloaded and installed (it took a fair wee while) and I've only got around two hours in or so (and to be honest it's pretty boring so far). I guess if you've read this far you were expecting 'hallelulah's' and s%hit but sadly I can't provide you with that...instead I'm now going to head back into Banished to see if I can figure it out (kinda growing on me slowly). I will persevere (maybe) and see if it gets a little better but to be honest my hopes aren't 'up there' at the moment.

Strike Vector

Strike Vector is a Brutal aerial FPS that will see you test your skills online against other players in the tradition of Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. The game offers an hardcore learning curve for those who don't fear to die a lot at first but who will get a massive rewarding feeling when they will master the game and dominate the battlefield.

That's the actual description of the game on the Steam store page. It was as if the game was created just for me, to fulfill my boyhood dream of flying a spaceship fitted with rocket launchers and shock rifles.
To be like Luke Skywalker flying through tiny holes and corridors at break neck speed avoiding missiles and mines all while hunting down enemy ships.

Although when I first played the game, I realized though I'm not the only Luke Skywalker wannabe and that I was still just a padawan.
My first few games consisted of mostly crashing and some kamikazi High Fivers. I was about to Rage Quit, which is ironic, because the game developers call themselves that. I had knowingly and unknowingly stepped into the Dark Souls of Arena shooters.

It was not until a far more superior player with godlike skills killed me with my own homing missile that I realized Luke Skywalker had lots of practice...

So I stuck with it, discovered mines and swarm missiles (the dark side!).
I might never be Luke Skywalker (not with 300ms and sticking to the dark side), but damn it feels awesome when I get an accidental kill!

My Precious!

The Last of Us

It's Monday morning, just after midnight. My sweaty palms still have a thorough grip on my PS3 controller, but I know I should be going to bed any moment now since my Psychology class starts at 10am. I pause the game. My hand digs deeply into a packet of Doritos Extreme Cheese. My fingers squirm simultaneously with my hand in search of any sort crumbled cheesy delights, but nothing. Nada. Crestfallen by this discovery, I take a refreshing gulp from my 500ml bottle of Coca Cola, put my headphones back on and slouch back into my couch, next to my snoring pug, and continue my session of The Last of Us.

"Just one more hour." I think to myself. I'm about 60% through the single player campaign and aiming for around 70% before I go to sleep. I resume my game. As intense and pulsating as The Last of Us is, there is an uncharacteristically quiet and tranquil atmosphere in the air within the segment I'm busy playing. I explore. I scavenge. I craft. I explore. I scavenge. I craft. I explore. I scavenge. I empty my handgun's clip at a random tree after mistaking it for an infected/zombie. I craft. It's way too quiet in this area. Eventually some human enemies arrive. Pew pew, I wipe most of them out. Still some left. I go looking for them. Maybe behind this door OHHHHHHHHH MAH GAHD where'd you come from! *mash triangle times infinity* OHHHHHHHH MAHHHHHHHHH LAWD! Something totally unexpected and crazy just happened. My jaw literally drops. I can't help anxiously cry out "f*ck!". Things are happening. A lot of things. These are the moments seat edges are made of. My eyes have stretched out to their limits. I shriek with every movement of my character. Oh man, I'm so into this game right now and I don't even know it.

The game cuts to black. I breath. The picture comes back. Gameplay resumes. "Wth?" I pause. Shocked by what has just been revealed, I get up from my couch in rapid fashion. This frightens my dog and makes him jump off the couch. I give him a peanut buttered cookie and he calms down. But I'm still flabbergasted. I go to the toilet for a whizz. Still awestruck by what just happened in the game, I decide to sit down and drain the pipe that way in order to be in a more comfortable position to help the happenings sink in easier. It didn't help. Peeing while sitting down was an awful experience. But The Last of Us was a great one. Back to that.

I resume my game. I expected things to slow down for a bit after the exhilarating past 30 minutes, but no, the pace just kept its tempo. Things are happening. A lot of things are happening. But it's now happening constantly. And I'm in between all of it. It's pretty freaking awesome. The antecedent tempo went on for another quarter of the game. It was... wow. Whenever I came back to reality, it was as if I wasn't here, my body was on autopilot, but my mind was in the world of The Last of Us, sometimes my mind was the one telling me no, and my body was the one telling me yes. Whichever way I looked at it, I could not stop playing the game.

Sooner rather than later, the end credits rolled. I looked outside and the sun started rising. It was 6:30am. Screw my 10am Psychology class. I did what needed to be done. I wouldn't have been able to sleep had I decided to turn the game off before finishing it. Not a chance in hell. Cliffhangers occur whenever you put the controller down. It made me discover emotions I never even knew I had. The Last of Us is the quintessence of gaming, or at least what gaming should be, in my opinion. A day seldomly goes by without a thought going out to The Last of Us. What a game *cue slow clap*. Now to go pee again, standing up this time. Thanks for the competition iGame!

EDIT: Ah I just realised this is way too long. Oh well...

Sniper Elite 2.

Took a quick shot out of cover. Slow-mo kicked in and I got to see my bullet pass through not one but two pairs of German Bollocks. It was poetry in motion.

Enough said. ;)
