Are you planning to upgrade to Windows 10?

 • Nope. Not a Windows user.

Like it takes 1-2 min to log into my laptop since I am testing it first on my laptop before I will do my desktop.
But once its in it is fast.
About the same, but performance takes a hit once logged in and doing general working or browsing. YouTube playback is as choppy as basic OS operations.

Sounds like a driver problem then.
I'm sure it is, but all updates are supposedly installed.

I think the hardware is so old that this version of Windows can't detect the appropriate software for it. It feels incompatible.

Do you also have long login times?

This...

This is my issue with my lappie. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 10, and restarting the machine is a pain. It can take up to 5 to 7 minutes for the bloody thing to log into Windows and takes forever to load. But once it's going, everything is smooth and operating much better than Windows 8.1. It's really strange, and the internet searches I've done has been less than helpful.

have yet to look into it will do so soon.

Easy. run "netplwiz" from the Run command (win +R), then select not to enter a username and password. It'll ask you for a user/pass that will automatically be logged in. :)

Will this work even if a domain username and password is required?

Can't make any promises I'm afraid as I don't have experience with auto login on domains...But it wouldn't hurt (or would, if you cant login later hehe) to try DOMAINNAME\Username as user. I think if it DOESN'T work it won't let you save it.

It isn't that fast, it is just faster than what I'm used to, so my muscle memory keeps dragging it at the speed I used to I suppose, and then it gets stuck and I have to move away and try again.

If it keeps happening to me I'll just see if I can disable it somehow; that or drag faster :D

You can disable it

Right click desktop > display settings > Multi-tasking

So Windows 10 is awesome and all that, but there are a few issues I'm having with it.

Sometimes after an extended period of use of a single app/software, the program slows down and sometimes becomes unresponsive, eg. Excel becoming unresponsive after working on a sheet for about 4 hours or so. This doesn't happen every time, but it does happen more often than in Windows 8.1 or 7

Groove Music has also stopped working completely. Of the thousands on songs in my library, which is on the laptop, only 2 songs are playing. I cannot for the life of me get any of the other songs playing. Other music players are working fine though, but it's a shame that Groove is a bit buggy.

I can't figure out how to add additional live tiles to the Start menu, but that's probably due to my own incompetence.

Starting this laptop is now a nightmare, with startup and login times stretching up to 10 minutes for no apparent reason, even after trying various fixes from the internet. This is not a slow laptop by any means, but still it takes forever to restart. This also happens to my boss' laptop that also got upgraded to Windows 10 recently.

Every now and then small little issues creep up, like the notifications icon in the system tray not clearing, even after deleting all notifications. It's not earth-shattering issues, but little annoyances nevertheless.

Let me try and hit some off the top of my pip

What is the memory utilization for the process?

Any processes on delayed start? Which AV are you running?

No idea there

Haven't checked it out, and will do so the moment it happens again. I must say that the size of the Excel sheets are larger than normal (probably in the 100 to 300 Mb range), but they were all working fine in Win 8.1. Maybe there is more investigation needed there.

Drag and drop :-)

Bloody Trend Micro OfficeScan pushed to us by our IT department. I've tried stopping most processes and programs from automatically starting. Still no luck in making it quicker though, but at least the time is down to about 5 minutes now...it's something

No idea there

But thanks for the reply dude.

Anyone using Microsoft Edge? If so, thoughts?

I do, it keeps making itself the default browser after every restart, which is not a biggie.

I kinda like it, often do not notice the speed difference between Edge and Chrome, it's actually in some cases better than chrome despite being an "IE".

That I am indeed.

64bit Office (at least the 2010 era ones) did have quite some known incompatibilities with other software (most notably for me that i can confirm - Civil Designer), that can cause WEIRD crap to happen to your machine... I spent alot of time troubleshooting a win 7 machine with 64bit office before figuring out just reinstalling the office (which wasn't the software freaking out) as 32bit was the cause....just something worth keeping in mind :)

I'm suspecting that it's a memory management related issue. 32-bit office is limited to 2GB memory per application (read Excel) process. Because Excel also requires more memory to store the indexes to the increased number of rows and columns you may not be able to load larger workbooks under Excel. Memory Fragmentation may also mean that it is difficult to make use of all of the available 2 GB of virtual memory. Some Excel processes require large contiguous blocks of memory. Sometimes the total amount of free memory may be large enough but is broken into many small areas separated by used memory. In this case Excel may not be able to obtain the required memory.

What can also happen is that parts of Excel's fragments, essentially due to it being allocated and not actively used, then gets moved to the page file (virtual memory/swap file/call it what you want) and that starts becoming a little nightmare if you suddenly start using these "dormant" blocks of data.

Junk, I still use Chrome and Firefox...

and IE on Windows 10, as it's still there.

Upgrade of fresh install DieGrootHammer

Oh and I picked up problems with AV apps as well. AVG being the worse.

Large Excel files give me no problems worked on one today for more than 6 hours.
