Windows 10 will be free for software pirates

I don't think this has been mentioned or posted.

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users this summer, but Microsoft is also extending its offer to software pirates. "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," says Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Windows chief, in an interview with Reuters. The move means that thousands, perhaps millions, of machines will get a free copy of Windows 10 even if a license has not been properly acquired. "Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."

It will be free due to the fact that it is probably an OS built entirely out of microtransactions
The new FTO (Free to Operate) platform now with added features such as "Start Menu Button" available in the Microsoft Marketplace for a low price of 29.95 USD or handy tools such as "Networking", on special for Windows Gold Users at a low 4.95 USD for a limited time only.

:)
Let's see how they intend to make money off of a free OS first before we all get excited.

This does seem a bit weird, so basically they're just giving windows 10 out for free to everyone ? if that's true and its just them being awesome then good going Microsoft, but it feels like there is some secret agenda about.

Maybe they just want to grow their platform as much as possible.

Yeah iu saw this and it makes me excited but how long will this be "free" till it tells you that you have to buy this or your windows "trail" has expired?

There has to be a catch eventually.

Marketing 101: Get users to make use of your product long enough to get properly accustomed and cozy with, then sneaky in the payment schemes.

Business 10: If they do not, I will be surprised. Microsoft is a business and a business needs to make money.

I am going to switch to Windows 8 as soon as I can (a legit version of Windows 8, I might add). :)

Microsoft makes little to no money from selling OS's to consumers (Us). They do however make millions if not billions from something like Office365, which is subscription based which is where I think they are going with Windows 10.

They want to push their app store, so what better way than getting millions of people to use Windows 10 and getting app developers to push stuff through the Windows app store, whether it be once of purchases, or small monthly subs they'll make a hell of a lot more money like that than they would ever do by selling Windows 10.

Let's not forget about them selling all the user info gathered over each copy of windows 10.

Microsoft are being incredibly smart.

The Joker has has hit the nail on the head. they are probably cool with giving away OS for free, as they know they will recover the money from the Store or other "linked" means. but this way, they are ensuring they have total (ongoing) dominance in the PC arena

Sweet, I am actually looking forward to Windows 10, so making it a free upgrade is quite nice. It does seem like they are going the iOS model, where the key is getting people on the platform and making money from there, rather than making money from the actual OS.

Reading between the line scares me. I know Microsoft want to push for a subscription based system for software and the fact that they say this free upgrade for all users is for the 1st year only is a clue on what is coming.

I have a feeling that updates will be locked away to subscribers only. Note I said updates not patches. They going to roll out 10.1 within the 1st year and only make it available to people whom subscribed. 2 to 5 years from now that same subscription will be needed for patches as well.

They are playing the long game here... don't let the free "drugs" fool you.

MS stated that it won't actually be free for pirates. They can update their pirated version of Windows to Windows 10 but will then have to activate it by buying a legit license.

RemoveWAT 2.2.8 is Today’s Best Working Activator for Windows 7. It activates Windows 7 efficiently. Everyone knows that the Microsoft Windows 7 is the most used and family member Microsoft Product. Users can download Windows and take advantage of all functions. We can summarize the Microsoft Windows 7 is the is the most enhancing version of Microsoft Windows and can be employed for various purposes to produce fun for homes also to work for office sites. Windows 7 requires the product key to make it fully working as well as the cost for the activation key is bit high so how to download Microsoft Home windows 7 product keys-activation limitations? Yes, there is an easy solution you can make your copy of Home windows 7 genuine in a smaller amount then 3 steps and it is RemoveWAT 2.2.8 Windows 7 Activator , you’ll be able to download Windows 7 activator and that is named as RemoveWAT 2.2.8 after downloading select Activate and Boom your own copy of Microsoft Home windows is fully activated.

I'm sure there'll be something of a simliar nature for Windows 10 considering this has been around for years and supports multiple iterations of Windows already, I won't be surprised if it already works on 10.

It will be free to get but not free to use.

that much is obvious.

Also if they go subscription model i can see a lot of development going into streamlining linux or something. Heck steam OS might even be the way to go.

Steam OS is one thing I am really interested in and getting to know.

When I heard Win 8 was going to be able to get Win 10 for free I was like wow awesome!!

Then it got me thinking, a couple of months ( almost a year) later, what's this? Windows 7 & pirated copies can now upgrade too...

Sounds too good to be true, so I haven't upgraded yet until I see what's up.

I like where Microsoft is trying to go ( the way forward is free OS) Linux, Android, Steam, Apple OS, ect. Except maybe Apple OS isn't really free :P

But the point is they are finally seeing that people aren't willing to spend so much on software. They should instead take Winrar approach, if you like it buy it, if you don't, use it without paying for it.

Speaking of I just wish malware bytes was like winrar
