Windows 7 Q&A

I got me windows 7 Ultimate and I'm about to install it on my next system format. I've got acouple question for those who have it allready that I haven't really been able to find through google.

1: Hows the compatability with older games? Especialy pre-XP games.

2: Is there a "Classic" theme that reverts the UI back to the win 9x look? (XP and onwards themes give me headache, litterally)

3: Whats the major difference between x86(32bit) and x64(64bit versions)? I've got both.

Well you might have trouble with pre-xp games. but you can always get them from gog:p

Yes there is a classic theme

Well the higher bit which is the x86(64bit):p
It allows you to use more than 2gigs of ram.

a legal one i take it ? ;)

1) pre-xp games i use gog, dosbox or dotemu.
2) yes there is classic, that's only why i run my windows.
3) 64x good for 2gig+ ram, else no reason.

1. So far no real problems with games that's old. Septera core,Jagged Alliance 2 Baldur's Gate 2.

2. Try to up your refresh rate of your screen to 75.

3. 64 is for 3 Gigs ram and upwards.

But be prepared for all kinds of weird problems with Ultimate.

What probs? I have not had one problem with widows 7 ultimate.

AFAIK, all win 7 uses WORKGROUP as their network domain (remembering obscure facts here, may not be entirely correct) and Win XP Pro also uses WORKGROUP, however XP home uses MSHOME. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 and I have had troubles accessing the laptop (running Win XP) from Win 7, but not Ubuntu. However, I can access my Win 7 machine from the laptop. The "There are no logon servers available to service your request" is a common occurence from what I've googled.

Also, if you have/want to install a new edition of Ubuntu or current Linux distros you will have to Install Windows first. IT's due to the way that Windows can only have MBR partitioned disks and not GPT partitioned disks - which Linux uses.

Other than a few network hassles, everything has been working out great for me! I especially love the rotating desktop pics that you can have :D

The ram thing is 4GB and XP and Win 7 run fine together apart from sharing a printer from XP to Win7 can sometimes be a pain in the ass.

1. No different than XP. Same workarounds for old games that won't run.
2. There's a classic theme (95/98 style).
3. Go x64 (64 bit). Every new installation of windows now days should be x64. x86 (32 bit) is on the verge death and you will end up re-installing windows shortly if you go x86. x86 (32 bit) Won't recognize more than 4 gigs of memory, keeping in mind that your video card shares this memory space. ie. 1GB video card, 4GB Ram, OS will only see 3GB of RAM, 2GB video card, 4GB RAM, OS will only see 2GB RAM. It's got to do with the maximum number that a 32 bit architecture can recognize vs 64 bit. Basically, the largest integer that a x86 OS/architecture can recognize is 4,294,967,296 (4GB) and 64 bit 18,446,744,073,709,551,615(????). So x64 has some future proofing =)

4. XP and Windows 7 network perfectly fine with each other. The network at my office was running like this for a while as people transitioned to Windows 7.
