Johannesburg - Software giant Microsoft said the latest version of its flagship operating system, Windows 7, has been released to manufacturing, meaning its development is now complete.

Speaking on a conference call to which Fin24.com had exclusive access in South Africa, Rich Reynolds, general manager for Windows marketing said Microsoft partners worldwide have received the finished product and the first computers to ship with Windows 7 will arrive on October 22 2009.
"Today we are announcing the release to manufacturing of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2," said Reynolds.

"This means the final code has been delivered to our partners so that they can build products in time for the holiday season."
He said Microsoft aimed to deliver Windows 7 within three years of releasing Windows Vista and is pleased that it managed to meet its deadline. Vista was completed in November 2006.
He adds Windows 7 was developed with the collaboration from customers who were allowed to test early versions of the operating system and provide Microsoft with feedback.

Reynolds said 10 million customers signed up for the feedback programme.
He said that South African IT giant Dimension Data was one of the partners to applaud Microsoft's efforts in Windows 7 at a recent partner conference.
"Our volume licensing customers will be able to download Windows 7 beginning on August 7 and then our affiliated partners will receive the code on August 17," said Reynolds.

Pricing for Windows 7 in South Africa has not been finalised and the product will be available in six different editions, but only Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate will be available for retail in most countries.
In developing countries Microsoft will release Windows 7 Starter Edition which is available at a reduced price, but has several limitations, such as the inability to run more than three applications at the same time.

Just got this in an email now :)

They said the price might be a little less than Vista....... still freekin expensive tho.

That's another reason I won't be jumping the Win7 bandwagon just yet. By the time I've got my next build the problems should be sorted.

Think ill follow your example. Wait for my next build which will be sometime in next year and by then all the little issues will be sorted. Think i might invest in a multi-touch screen for my next rig.

Any word on Price? Wonder if it works well with games and such?

No idea on price but so far I've had less issues with games than I did with Vista using my Win7 RC.

Only issue I've had is that I can't get my Logitech webcam to work. No Win7 drivers and Vista ones don't work. Not that I really care, it's a piece of crap cam but it does bug me slightly when I can't get things working.

hhhhmmmm well considering all the issues that Vista had im sure they will definitely work on them with Windows 7

Loving x64 Win7 RC - However it doesn't support my Sony HandyCam USB Streaming (sucks) which I really desperately need to get working.
Otherwise everything else works like a bomb.
Anyone has any luck with the x64 drivers let me know. The model number for the handycam is DCR-TRV19.

I am planning to go for Windows7 when it drops. Will probably be using it in August already.

Price won't be too bad if buying it with a system. It is normally cheaper compared to buying it as a full retail product.

This year is upgrade time, so I started checking for some new laptops... I did a brief spec and it came to more than R50K! I cannot believe how much laptops have gone up in price!

How so soon?

I'm switching to Win7 x64 when I buy my P5N-D mobo and be forced to format... I would've bought it next month but seeing as Win7 is coming out in two months I'll buy it in Oct.
People I've spoken to have no problems. Only problem with gaming is PB, and I'm sure PB is looking at that problem.

Yes but there are restrictions with the dsp compared to the retail version.

I will be getting home premium retail the moment it drops. Been very impressed with win 7 x64 so far. Only issue I have is with neverwinter nights but I have been told its fixed with one of the newer leaks .

What a decent OS compared to Vista... One can compare this OS with the likes of XP.
Stable, reliable, quick, smooth and elegant!
What an experience!
I love Windows 7!
