Windows..Too much too soon?

Greetings to all my fellow forum users. I'm fairly new here but I thought I might as well get to posting.

I heard recently that they will possibly dropping the numerical values relating to Windows releases. In other words, instead of the new Windows being called "Windows 9" it will simply be released as "Windows". Subsequently this means that we will be issued versions or updates instead of full separated releases.

What is your opinion on this shift and do you think it will finally break the "good/bad" cycle of Windows releases?

Another question related to this topic is, how will it affect current users and gamers? They have already said they will drop support of DirectX 12 for anything below Windows 8 and may drop further support for 7 and Vista sooner than they did with XP.

Would love to hear your opinion on this matter.

Imagine doing a search for a problem if they do this. I wish they would rather use the years like they do with word and such.

Well, so far Microsoft's streak has been such that every other version of windows is ok. I really hope it's not true that they're just calling it "Windows" without some suffix - gonna make things hella confusing.

Well they did say they gonna drop the outright buying of OS's and go to a monthly sub instead like with Office 365. Maybe this is part of the plan.

Yeah I think it's an attempt to try and bring together all the different Windows packages into one centralized account. I do prefer the Office 365 sub based system compared to the old Office system. But whether it works for an entire OS is another story altogether..

Still using Windows 7. Don't have any reason to upgrade yet. It's way too early for a new version of Windows. It's still too early for Win 8 for that matter...

a 3 year cycle for windows is more than enough (for security and technological purposes) linux distro's run on 6 month cycles and OSX switched from a bi annual update system to an annual one so 3 years for every major windows release isnt bad.

Getting properly accustomed to an OS, then another arrives shortly after - and another!

I'm quite content with Windows 7. I changed (without hesitation) to Windows Vista (from XP), and then not too long after Vista, I changed to 7. But, I'm in no hurry to switch to 8.

8.1 is a brilliant OS. Ignoring the Start Screen and charm bar for a moment, there is nothing I would change in the OS. It's fast and gimmicks like Aero don't detract from the work that needs to be done.

I never really used the Start menu anyway - I used to hit the Windows key and start typing the program I wanted to run and press Enter. Windows 8.1 is exactly the same. It looks a bit different while performing this action, but it works the same.

yeah 8.1 is quite flawless imo. but lately I have been getting the occasional BSOD...

I actually couldn't agree more! Im really please with Windows 8!

Im sure that it will become a monthly subscription though... Its the only way they can seriously combat piracy... I just hope its going to be a reasonable subscription...

Aren't there problems with certain games or programs using Windows 8? You guys have almost convinced me to switch - sounds like you swear by the OS.

What improvements are there? Boot up times, memory usage?

You still have your basic windows interfaces, right?

it's like win7 without a start button. except it's more stable and a lot faster, especially if it's running on a SSD. my PC boots up in about 20sec

I would even say quicker than 20 seconds... Its incredibly stable, SO responsive, especially with an SSD, and I have actually become quite a fan of the "app" based "home screen" thing... But if its not for you you never have to use it...

File copying from one Window to another? And installation of Software - is this also simpler and easier.
