We've tried running a shop before (not for gear, specifically, but for games) and it is a challenge wholly different to running a news website and forum community.

You have to worry about stuff like credit card fraud, returns (if the shirts and stuff don't fit in this case, I guess), managing couriers, and stock control.

So it's unlikely we'll launch a shop soon, I think

Giving away stuff for free is so much simpler...
