I need to get a wireless connection in my downstairs studio, using the established Telkom ADSL connection upstairs. I got a wireless modem, so I need to get a wireless receiver on my other PC (downstairs)
Any body have experience with this kind of thing? Setting up etc - I've been looking on the internet for wireless receivers and I'm getting nowhere fast. Do you get any that are not cards - but external? Would having that wireless modem and a receiver actually work in the first place. It's just not worth the mission of extending the physical phone line.
Any advice?
 
Do you know the thickness of the floor between upstairs and downstairs?
I know that most wireless from laptops can go trough about 3 walls then it starts to get a lil weak.

You get usb wireless.

All you do is plug in the wireless and hope it picks up the router then just connect like a normal network to the router. And your on the internet just get the password for your wireless if your lucky it will be displayed on your router, if your unlucky like me and have a telkom 105 and the password does not show.

The N series of the wireless are the best atm since its 300mbps where as the other are slower, so if you want to copy files it would be the best choice.

Yeah like that one. If you have a friend with a laptop why not test it out if you get signal downstairs.

Backwards compatible with IEEE 802.11g and IEEE 802.11b devices <<< these are the old ones the g and b.
 
Yeah like Waco says, you can get USB attachments to recieve the signal. I use one but the problem is that the signal strength is not great, mind you mine is 2 years old. But get an internal card with an ariel they tend to be more powerful. Just make sure you turned your router to max

They often include several bandwidths including the popular g/b
 
Awesome - thanks guys. I admit I had no clue about G, B and N until you guys mentioned it. You learn something new every day :)
 
You might also consider a wireless router. That way, adding any additional wireless devices is a snap.

The Linksys WRT54GL is a sweet, sweet little wireless router.

[EDIT] Ooops, misread your original post. Yeah, a USB receiver or expansion card should work out nicely. You'll probably want one with an antenna at that distance, though.
 
Ok, managed to get hold a Belkin USB receiver, which works fine - it's connecting to device upstairs with a very good signal, set up the network upstairs, but the downstairs PC is still constantly searching for the network address and thats as far as it goes.
 
Okay tell me did you first install the drivers for the usb dongle or did you plug it in first then installed the driver?
Inserting the usb drive first could make that your connection is not working. uninstall the driver then make sure to install the driver first then plug in the usb dongle.

This is maybe why its was not picking up an ip address.

I see you found the english version :)

I first installed the driver, then the program asked me to insert the USB, which I did and it carried on installing. And that was that - I did remove and reinstall the drivers again but the same thing happens.
 
murph are you using windows7 by any change?

If you are uninstall the software and restart the pc with the dongle out then plug in the dongle, don't install the software.

Go to device manager and find the ubs adapter and say update driver and then select the software from the disk.
 
No, I'm using XP - and I've tried to update the drivers from the device manager already - it says that the device is working fine. What I can gather, the dongle is connecting to the device upstairs, but not communicating with the network computer.
