Hi, im doing an internship these upcoming holiday and need a temp solution to help me through the 2 months in terms of gaming. Here i have and ADSL connection at home but im going to be away for 2months temporarily

Would you recommend the best option for me is to get CellC's whoosh? how is it for gaming (more specifically starcraft II) are there any other good wireless temp solutions out there that im missing?

I don't know how CellC has turned out for gaming, but steer away from iBurst. I was playing some XBL a while ago with one guy using iBurst and he is having a lot of problems with lagging, and I see he's posted that he's not even bothering to try play online at the moment because it's got so bad.

I have been using Vodacom and MTN 3G for online gaming (MW2, BLACK OPS, ETC.) for almost two years now. Have never had a problem with it. :)

Depending on where you will be for your internship Cell C should work but make sure you are in the middle of a dark red area not just on the edge otherwise you wont have full 3G connection all the time.

Gaming and wireless just wont leave you happy at all.
The latency is not just high, it is extremely unstable.

One second you're at 100, next second you're 250, then suddenly 20.

Thing is, latency is something you can very easily get used to. Problem is, you get used to your latency range.
Example: WoW.
While my latency is usually around 200-300ms, I get used to that really easy.
Back when I still used Sentech (AAARRRRGHH!) and after that with Vodacom, the latency would spike between 300 and 3000 every other second with stops in-between when it feels like it.

It's just impossible to get "trained" to something so terribly erratic.

i have been using Vodacom and CellC 3G for quite a while on a wide range of games and as long as you have a good enough signal you are fine, even with latency. I play Black Ops, BFBC2, SC2 etc and no problems. When there is very bad weather i don't play FPS cause then i lag a bit but then i just move over to SC2 and its fine. Just make sure on the signal before you buy if you can. CellC is a good option cause you can buy that prepaid bundle for 12 months for cheap and then you wont have to load airtime on every month.

I use iburst, Personally playing Starcraft 2 is quite fine (Although I do get a relatively good signal) But playing any fps game usually results in horrible messy lag spikes happening every few minutes/seconds.

Starcraft 2's servers are quite fast and naturally try to cater for unstable lag, but it can only go so far :|

the cellc woosh works great if you are covered...so before buying it, just ensure you go check coverage on the website and make sure you zoom in as much as possible when you are on the map - as it might look like an area is covered but as you zoom in, parts are not fully covered ie light red apposed to dark red

On fps games they cannot use ping compensation as it would mess up everyone's game. In RTS's, MMOs etc they compensate quite a lot.

I also had Voda3g for some time. Decent internet, but the only game i could ever play successfully was trackmania... If you wanna shoot people, they gonna shoot you first, every time. Period.

Maybe taking a break from online fps will be good for you, I'm just saying

I suppose its which area you live in with iburst, and which modem are you using, are u using desktop modem or the pcmia card. i have a friend who is using iburst desktop modem and has no problems in starcraft 2, they actaully have improved their performance by quiete alot recently over the past couple of months

Seems most people missed the temp part here ;)

iBurst and WiMax is therefor out of the question just as much as adsl. Can't believe I'm actually recommending it but Vodacom prepaid bundles seem to be your best bet. Maybe just stay away from games that require low latency for 2 months.

Depends on what area you are in and who can give the best latency, Try test each one if you can. Latency will be the key to the best gaming :)

I've used 3G before as a backup (CellC, Vodacom, both excellent coverage by me) when my fixed line was down. It was frustrating as hell, very erratic at best. I would get some stable gaming for like 10 minutes then the latency would start shooting all over the place. Its basically just complete luck if you get a decent gaming experience on wireless.
