At first when I saw this game I thought "oh dear..." I decided to give it a try anyway, since someone on mmorpg.com recommended it. I downloaded it in full knowledge that it was created with kids in mind (a Harry Potter-like MMO with strict chat filters).
All I can say is that I was extremely pleasantly surprised. It's very polished, fun and addictive. The graphics are nothing amazing, but they're more than sufficient for the game, which should run well on almost any modern computer. Secondly, the soundtrack is suprisingly good too. The music suits areas well and the soundeffects are spot-on too.
What I love most about the game, though, is the combat system. If you've ever watched Yughio!, you'll have an idea of what Wizard 101's combat system is like. Basically there are monsters walking around like normal. When you approach one or vice versa, a dual arena appears on the ground and you, said monster and whoever else is in the general vicinity run to your places in the arena. Teams then get 30 seconds to select a card, after which the cards are played. When you play a card, a monster appears out of the middle of the arena and attacks your opponent. They have everything from leprechauns to huge elephants of fiery awesomeness.
The free trial is pretty long (technically it never ends), so it's worth a try. The download isn't too large either. I plan on subscribing as the monthly fee is only $9.99. Well worth it!
