“World of Warcraft” on the iPad with the Help of Gaikai

WoW.jpg

Have you ever heard of Gaikai? It’s a service (currently in beta) that lets you play games in your browser, directly from the cloud. Gaikai runs and hosts the games, which are then streamed to the end-user with the help of Java, Flash or Silverlight.

Although iPad’s browser doesn’t support Flash, someone seemingly found the way to run World of Warcraft on the iPad via Gaikai, as seen in the screenshot below.

The entire thing would be far more credible if we had a video, but it poses some interesting questions: When (if) the technology behind Gaikai (or its competitors OTOY or OnLive) reaches maturity, could it be used for playing graphically intensive games on the iPad?

Touchscreen combined with (a) bigger action bar(s) and the "click to move option enabled" would make it a possibility :)

Add to that the fact that you need to actually type messages to other people in an MMO and you're essentially screwed :D It's possible, but I'd probably find it more stressful than anything.

Keyboard turning now replaced by pad turning?
This. HAHAHA :D

I think it would be pretty cool, probably targeting new customers as most WoW players would definitely play with a KB / Mouse over the iPad.

(but if I get given and iPad, I am sure i'd use it plenty ;) )

I'd just take gaming through my browser for now. It would help me, um, circumvent certain server issues (blerry webwasher) I have here at work.

This kind of cloud-based gaming is the future, but not on the iPad I fancy. The tech just isn't ready for it yet. And especially not here in SA.
