Another common misconception about 3D Printing is that it’s limited to desktop printers that can only extrude plastic filament. If I had the time, I would do a complete yearlong series debunking all the myths and misconceptions surrounding 3D Printing. Instead, our engineers went ahead and built something that proves this technology beyond any doubt. So long sad disfigured Yoda heads, no more pretending like that’s going to cut it for this industry.

Laser sintering is one of the most accurate manufacturing processes available, and more than accurate enough to build the 3D Metal Printed interchangeable and interfacing parts within our 1911 series gun. The gun proves laser sintering can meet tight tolerances. 3D Metal Printing has less porosity issues than an investment cast part and better complexities than a machined part. The barrel sees chamber pressure above 20,000 psi every time the gun is fired. “We’re proving this is possible, the technology is at a place now where we can manufacture a gun with 3D Printing,” says Firestone. “As far as we know, we’re the only 3D Printing Service Provider with a Federal Firearms License (FFL). Now, if a qualifying customer needs a unique gun part in five days, we can deliver.”

Well for one things fire arms are hardly controlled. All the people that should not have them manage to get them anyhow.

But let me tell you the american government will be all over this.

I don't know hey, as it stands there is very little gun control at the moment so I don't see this making any real impact.
The machines cost an absolute fortune, so normal people won't be able to do this, not yet and definitely not on any sort of large scale.
 
Missing the point guys, with Metal 3D printing you have so many possibilities. You could go to get your car fixed and if they don't have the part then they can print the intake manifold overnight, or any other part for that matter. You can go on an expedition across africa with a laptop and your printer so if you damage something you can replace it, from you Car to your caravan, tools and even plumbing fixtures. This is the tec that astronauts will need when they land on Mars or cross the solar system.

The gun was merely there to prove how accurate and strong the printing is. If need be I could make a gun from perspex and walk through any metal detector.
 
This technology is freeken awesome, if you're looking for old car parts you can just get someone to design it on cad for you before getting it printed! :love:

Great things to come i am sure with this tech, however i cant help wanting a copy made of me so i can drop it off on monday morning and pick it up on Friday afternoon again.

I guess what I was trying to say is that the manufacture of guns is controlled, this technology brings a whole lot of complication to this.
 
That thing must have been expensive (Wonder what the resolution was)

I've been thinking of getting a plastic one but the prices for a decent one can reach R20k-R50k.The metal laser ones prices are probably in the millions.

Decent ones go for quite a bit more than that.. Printing anything functional with a real tolerance attached to it will take a machine of R100k+.

I'll say again what I said in the other thread: The tech to make your own gun already exists. You need a minuscule (read: cheap) lathe and milling machine with a CNC controller, and a reamer. (I think. Maybe Borer. Both can be done in the local industrial area for cheap.) The tech to do this has always been available to the public at large.. If it didn't bother the government(s) that you could make a gun before, why should it now?
