That's exactly the approach I use, it hasn't failed me yet. There is even a couple of Chrome extensions to help you generate passwords like this, and coupled with 1Password, no power in the 'verse can stop me.

i used to use my name with a 5 and a * at the end as my PW but stopped using that as some sites did not like it much.

I notice passwords are synchronising these days over Firefox Sync or through Google Chrome and back in the day through Opera Link. Just how secure is it to do this?
