Would you buy this?

A friend at work just got his dirty hands on a i5 set (motherboard, chip and memory) and he's upgrading his setup.

So he's getting rid of his older stuff:

1 x Q6600 2.4Ghz quad core
1 x Gigabyte P35 DS3R
4 x 1GB Transcend DDR800
1 x Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU cooler

He's selling it for R1500.00 and I am very tempted to buy it. Would you buy it for that price?

That is a pretty good deal in my opinion. R1500 is a bargain, unless you suspect the hardware to break after a week, go for it. The motherboard and Processor alone is worth more than that.

Its not a terrible price so yeah not a bad deal I would say.

Also depends on whether or not it would be a serious enough upgrade on whatever you have to justify the money

Mmm.... The quad core I would say as probably worth R400-R500.

The motherboard about R400.

The memory about R250 for all 4.

The Cooler about R200-R250.

That is taking into account that it is a few years old, which I am assuming it is, so yeas probably worth the buy.

Hmm, The problem I see is that ram is old. So if you can find some ddr2 lying around for cheap it will be good but buying more ram for it is going to be expensive.

Also you should check whether there is any remaining warranty. Buying second hand technology out of warranty is always a risk.

Otherwise that mobo and cpu aren't too bad. It really depends on your use.

I'm upgrading from this:

First off I'm buying a Cooler Master CENTURION 5 II chassis also for this upgrade as I desperately need a new case and like this one.

Here's my current set up:

Core 2 Duo E4500 (2.2 Ghz)
MSi P41 Mobo (Cheapo)
2 x 2GB DDR800 Samsung ram (New - Going to use this with the new setup too)
Stock cooler.

I have a really nice aftermarket cooler I bought some time ago, but it's too big and heavy so I kept the stock cooler.

hmm... the thing about all electronics is that they fade... The performance of all this gear will be worse than it was a few years back. So even if it looks nice and was good in its day, I would rather have a cheaper(read less spec) brand new item.

Performance fades? :wtf:

Never heard of that before.

I just got the package from him... it's a little dirty as he wanted to clean it and give it to me tomorrow, but I wanted it now! In any case the memory was bought 3 months ago and there's a aftermarket cooler on the north and south bridge. Looks bad ass.

I have a Q6600 at work, very nice CPU. Good for games, made a huge improvement over the P4 3.2 I had before. Now my GFX is a massive bottleneck (9500GT).

Oh, and I take it if your RAM is 800MHz, it will be DDR2? (Do you get 800MHz DDR1?)

No you only get DDR 2 800 memory. Yeah it's DDR 2 800's. I want to buy some ddr 2 1066 memory but can you believe how damn expensive it is? I know it's very rare but wow. In any case guess I'll stick to DDR 800 for now.
