As requested by the people in Ave's thread. Post some of your work below. Even if it is just a short piece you wrote on the loo or a link to your published work.
Feel free to ask questions to the experienced writers in the thread. A little help goes a long way when it comes to indie publishing.
Later on I will update the thread/this post with some important info about self-publishing and links to some sites you can check out.

For now thought. Let the writing begin!

I will start things off with a paragraph from my first novel. Still very much a WIP.

“We had become the masters and kings of Earth. We had conquered disease, war and famine. The flag of our race stood firmly planted on the highest mountain of our home world. We stood there, on the highest peak, together. We watched as humankind flourished and lived together in peace. A few of those that stood on that peak were content with what they saw, some were not. As ever, those that were not content wanted more, their hearts needed more. They looked to the stars and saw the infinite potential hidden between them. They saw the resources and treasures just waiting to be plundered, and their hearts grew covetous. We should have considered the consequences of living and building among the stars. But we were too ignorant and too greedy. Our reach always exceeded our grasp. For in the darkness of the void an entity had been waiting for centuries, waiting for something exactly like our race to sink its teeth into.” - C.Smit WIP unnamed debut novel. Unedited.

Linking to what was said in the other thread, Dean Koontz is one of my favorite authors as i find his writing fun to read. I actually have had no trouble when it comes to reading his novels, but that might be due to the amount of reading I've done. :) I like the style i write but i cant seem to phrase things to make it look like what is in my head
(My imagination is huge thanks to all the reading i did when i was younger-spent most of my time reading).

I'm all for this! The other thread got me rereading some of my Creative Writing workshop material and my completed short story. I'll post it here once I've revised it again (seen a couple of areas that need improvement etc.)

Post whatever you want. I can't post more than I did in my first post, otherwise I might just spoil something. Gives people the general idea of my writing style. Although that was one of the first things I wrote for the novel, more than 7 months ago, my style has improved since then.

perhaps we can also post our writing goals, and then report back on how we're doing, just to keep each other motivated, and to keep us accountable.

I've been battling with a chapter in my new novel for the last couple of weeks, and finally decided that it just sucked and I would have to scrap it and come up with a completely new idea. So I'm aiming to "Knuckle down" and get the first draft finished today. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

That is very well written- It certainly grabs your attention.

Perhaps yeah. My current goal is simply, get my debut novel done.

And thank you for the compliment. It does exactly what I want it to, so that is a great relief.

Anyone else want to share some of their work? Let's not let this thread die so soon.

I will be posting my short story sometime this week, just want to give it another edit. But maybe to keep the thread going we could participate in a simple exercise that I was taught in my creative writing class.

The concept is called "A Sentence with Soul". The idea is to convey info, set a mood, scene, tone etc. all in one sentence. The idea is that everyday you write a sentence, and just one sentence. We could each post our sentence for the day on this thread and maybe each week vote for our favourite? It gives that added motivation and it is a good skill for writers to practice.

As an example here's on of my best sentences (as voted by my fellow writers) from the time I did the creative writing course:

The children stood mesmerised as he bellowed with laughter, his belly shaking and rolling with each spasm of joy, ripples of mirth repeating themselves across the stretched shirt, merriment playing havoc with the shape of his body.

Very nice idea. I will join in soon. My creative juices are spent for the day. Writing a 1000 words or so a day really makes the brain turn to moosh.

When time allows, I'll really join in on the action (I'm more a poet and only have two pages in on the novel I started writing a year and a half back). In the meantime, here's an interesting series by Nika Harper, Wordplay, where she goes through different concepts in writing and gives info and examples, and thereafter she gives a sample of something she wrote relating to an episode's subject matter with fan prompts as a guideline. Great stuff for aspiring writers to follow.

That's the girl from the League of Legends videos, right? Or am I going senile...

Yeah she used to do those.
Saint_Dee so you continued watching the vids.

I'll post what I typed up at 1AM in the morning when I couldn't sleep.

I did, they're really cool. She also does readings of her works outside of Wordplay.

Sir William the Fifth, Bill for short, luxuriated on the library lawns, sunning himself and thinking that life was indeed good... if only someone would change the litter box.

So this is a bit of a thread necro. But I think it might be worth it seeing as we have so many talented people here that aren't getting the opportunity to get their work seen.

On a side note. My debut novel is complete. It topped out at around 124000 words, give or take a few. It's off to the editors this week and then the real work starts.

Expect a cover reveal soon. I will create a new thread for it as soon as I have the final version of my cover. Maybe I will post some concepts if everyone behaves themselves and/or if Malice shows some skin.

Really cool mate, look forward yo it.

What happened to Saint_Dee - I quite enjoyed his writing.

So, if I wrote what could be a first chapter of a first attempt at a first novel, could I post it here for constructive criticism?

I must admit, I didn't keep going in this thread, but this year I'll be finished with my studies so hopefully I can devote some time to writing again.

Really happy for you Spartan it must feel tremendously satisfying to have completed the first draft. Best of luck for the edits and rewrites, may you remain strong through it all.
