An 83-year-old woman who was being treated for a respiratory infection in the Mediclinic Kimberley underwent heart surgery when she was mistaken for another patient, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Mediclinic spokeswoman Denise Coetzee told the newspaper a misunderstanding between two specialists led to Rita du Plessis being operated on on July 25.

She was in the same ward as another elderly woman and both were patients of the same physician.

And this is a Mediclinic. Not a government hospital; private. What will happen if the lady develops complications? Any heart surgery is a delicate procedure and 83 is not exactly a spring chicken. I hope they get sued right into the big hole.

My wife and I have both had some horrible experiences at Mediclinics. We now go to a Netcare clinic in Joburg when needed.

You think you're safe at private hospitals in this country? Think again.

Two of my close friends have family members that are dying and suffering from incompetence SA.

One's father contracted MRCA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus superbug) after a hip replacement operation due to the hospital not being sterilized properly and now only has a very short time left to live (less than a year). My other mate's father went for a knee operation and contracted some kind of degenerative nerve disease, TWICE, after being to the hospital again, also due to precautions not being taken.

Incompetence and BEE is spreading everywhere, including to the areas where our lives depend on it.

You cannot even afford to be hospitalized in this country anymore.

Private clinics here are bad. They just want your money and nothing else. I know a few people that have had botched surgeries at these places.
