XBOX 360 and USB Memory Support - who's tried it?

So I've been thinking of using the new USB memory support for the XBOX 360 and I've come across some interesting facts. It turns out you can have two 16GB USB drives plugged in at the same time which will give you a total of 32GB of storage. That's not bad!

Also, the XBOX 360 branded SanDisk memory sticks come in at R900 for a 16GB module. I can get 2 16GB Transcend USB drives for cheaper than that! Surely there's no bid difference apart from the fact that you have to setup the drives first? And even that shouldn't be a lot of effort, considering that it's done on an XBOX, how hard can it be??

Why da heck would anyone pay R900 for a single 16GB USB Flash Drive??
 
Branding my man branding, why do we pay more for Asus cards over POV, etc.

Anyway I use it currently but only to transfer stuff between my xbox's.
 
I'm only planning on using it to transfer the stuff over when that new XBOX comes out :) Would still like to get my ducks in a row before the time comes.
 
Just be careful of getting lower speed Flash Drives
Certain drives have performance issues with saving and others fail the packetloss test completely
I've tested Transcend drives though and the newer ones work without any issue and conform to Xbox performance requirements
 
It's probably also worth mentioning that if you use any other brand than the official Xbox stick, it'll turn up a performance warning.

LOL Jis M$ are a bunch of greedy buggers. To be very honest with you I'm seriously surprised that they're even allowing you to use an "unbranded" USB stick. They could have just stuffed it to us and made it proprietary to use the MS branded ones. :(

Got myself a Transcend Jetflash620 16GB (Highspeed) flashdrive http://goo.gl/cfFW
The highspeed drive was a bit difficult to locate in shops locally, but got one from Prophecy for a bit more than a normal speed drive http://goo.gl/O4BX.

One important note:
Some new flashdisks comes with a seperate cdfs 'partition' on the drive itself - this partition usually contains the encryption or other security software that they try to make you use. For me it's utterly useless and there is no way to remove this partition easily.
This is a BIG problem if trying to use it with your console, as the xbox will ONLY read this cdfs partition and not see it as an empty flasdrive. You can also not just format the drive as it will only format the data partition and keep the cdfs partition active - no amount of hdd management in windows can delete this partition...
I had to do various google searches to try and find a way (or an application) to remove this cdfs partition and just reformat my stick as FAT. The method/application is different for each flashdrive brand so you have to do a bit 'o searchin'...

But once this was done, you plug it in the xbox, go into memory settings and format the detected removable drive - takes a few minutes and Bob's your uncle.

Also planning to use it to transfer data to my Stealthbox, when it arrives :)

*on a side note - Even though this highspeed drive passed the xbox test, and supposedly have higher transfer speeds than a DVD would have, I have however seen slower data loading while it is loading game content from the USB.
How I noticed this was I got the borderlands Knoxx expansion and saved it on the stick, but when it is loading textures in the game, it takes quite a while longer to load than the original game took to load textures from DVD...
But its still quite playable!
so yeah, maybe its just Borderlands, but i cannot say...

Nope Azimuth, used the Transcends and no performance warnings, clean speed and integrity checks, in fact a message stating that they comply with MS specifications
 
Oh, really? Well, my friends and I all got those warnings using other brands - no problems with formatting or anything, just a message that reduced performance was possible.
 
Yeah I was expecting the same to happen to this one, but alas, the latest models of Transcend drives work flawlessly, I actually stopped and read the pop up twice because I couldn't believe my eyes
 
Been using the xbox formatted flash disk since the update came out (Note to someone who posted that they watched some tv series using this - you've always been able to watch videos from a flash disk and this thread is about the update that allows you to save xbox content to a flash disk)

Anyway, works perfectly, got the warning that it might be a little slow. I'm using an oldish flash disk of mine (4 gigs), and admittedly it takes longer to save games, but don't really mind waiting a little longer for the convenience of being able to easily play different xboxs.
