Xbox 360 HDD - Do I need one?

So while I'm waiting for my new 23" monitor to arrive I have nothing to play on :( It's been 8 agonising days since I ordered my screen and thanks to easter, it's taking much longer. Now I am thinking of getting a new HDD, but how exactly is it going to benefit my Xbox? With usb storage on the way, is there really any point of having one? My internet cap is 1gig (wireless is expensive, very) and updates would be rather expensive too :p (I'm not too clued up since I only recently got my xbox).

Another thing: is it possible/playable to play on LIVE with a connection that has 110ms latency? Not 3G, but wireless. Similar to wimax. It is however very stable. Thanks!

Nah, if you're not planning on downloading much, then the Xbox HDD add-on is a bit of an extravagant expense. A flash drive should do you just fine.

Xbox system updates are quite small, by the way - probably less than 100 MB in total for NXE, once-off (and if you've got a recent model Xbox, that's already installed) - and game updates (patches) are typically around 5 MB.

I play on Xbox LIVE using iBurst wireless, with no serious latency problems.

im curious about the flash drive update ... does it need to be a flash drive or can it be a usb external hard drive? i mean i have a 40gb laptop drive so i can partition it to 2x 16gb partitions if the max allowed is 16gb.

That's something I'm waiting to find out too, actually. :P

Update drops tomorrow, so I guess we don't have much longer to wait then.

I know the max size is definately 16GB , but I'm not sure if two partitions on a single HDD will work. I suspect not. :|

It's far better to have a flash drive as it will have a much better seek time compared to spinning media.

EDIT: You will be able to use media larger than 16GB but only 16GB will be used by the XBox while the rest should be accessible by windows/linux/mac. (This is what I was told) Just click here for more info

In a blog post, Microsoft's Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson) said the update will let users utilize as much as 16GB of a flash drive for game-related data, and up to two storage devices can be connected at once for a maximum capacity of 32GB. USB hard drives "may work" but you'll still be limited to 16GB of storage. The remaining space will be accessible with a computer.

My screen is finally arriving today :D Anyway I have a 4gig flash drive, what exactly can it be used for? Save games and images? Is it possible to install games to a flash drive, a bigger one of course?
