Hi, I'm new to the forum and hope I'm posting in the write section. I'm not very technical - just like playing games. I use iburst usb modem connected to my laptop and in general don't have problems. I just bought a xbox 360 second hand and I'm not able to get it to connect to the internet or to windows media centre. I've shared the connection (as advised on the xbox live website) and I have connected the ethernet cable to the xbox and laptop. If anyone has any advise on how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.:)

Xbox 360 Network Troubleshooting

thanks Cronus086. Will read through the link. Hope something in there helps :). i was wondering if it is a firewall problem - will check. it can pick up all the external wireless so it is able to read something, just won't connect to my pc. :(

I have the Xbox connected to my laptop via an ethernet cable.
The Iburst modem is connected to the laptop.
I've enable sharing as per the xbox forum instructions.
I use AVG Premium Security.
Is there anyone who uses iburst to connect to xbox? How did you get it to work?

Have you tried making a wireless hotspot on your laptop then connecting your xbox to it via wireless or the other way is to get a plug powered modem which isnt connected by usb but a lan cable.

Thanks very much Ichigo. That sounds like a plan. Will get someone in IT to do that for me lol. Re the plug powered modem, iBurst also suggested that and are sending a technician out to come do some tests. Apparently part of my problem is that I have some very tall buildings surrounding my place and it is blocking the signal. The technician is going to come check for the best and clearest direction and install a directional receiver ( I think it is called a receiver) if it helps. If it doesn't we will go with the plug powered modem.
Thanks for the really great advise received.

No problem hopefully you can get sorted out with some help

I helped a friend with this exact problem just last week.
Make sure your IP on your laptops Ethernet conection is set to 192.168.0.1, for some reason it sometimes stays on " obtain an IP address automatically".
Your Xbox should be set to obtain IP automatically.
I hope it helps.

Update on my Xbox-internet saga lol. I now understand why Microsoft didn't include SA in its Xbox One launch - stating the xbox one needed a reliable internet connection.
The max speed i can get with my current modem, with a flat panel to give me a constant signal, is 1.01mbps.
Without the flat panel (not sure what it is called) to give me a constant signal from one direction I get anything from 0.19mbps to 0.66mbps depending on the time of the day.
The max i will get if I change modems will be 2mbps (with the flat panel thingy to give me a constant signal from one direction). I think I need to get a router as well for the Xbox. So I'll be using the Xbox without internet but for my PC games I will have to get the bigger modem I think. It took me whole day on Sunday to download a 1.7G game from Xbox Live website to my PC :(
A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all who took an interest and for all the suggestions. I have tried them all - maybe I'm doing something wrong. But will speak to the tech at iburst who has been helping me and see what I can do next. Iburst is probably hearing ching ching while I go

Sounds like you need better internet speed with a different wireless provider since your speed is quite bad.

I would look into going with 8ta or Cell c if you got coverage.

I agree. But speaking to iburst first to see what they can do to help. The max iBurst can do is 2mbps on their wireless broadband. I hope that is enough.

I doubt it will be up to the standard if you plan on doing any online gaming with your Xbox.
I'm pretty sure that even if you get your connection sorted out you probably won't get proper latency, that's rare on a wireless connection.

Apparently they can install a flat panel which will give me a constant speed from one beacon. So things are looking up. :)
Apparently I am picking up signals from 6 different places - because of the tall buildings around me which blocks the signals my modems "hops" around lol. The technician did a test to see from which direction i got the strongest signal and they can install the panel to get its signal from that direction only.
Would it also be a good idea for me to get a router and plug the Xbox into that?
Once again, thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help.

Well you should only need a switch since the Iburst one is the modem

Or if you plan to only connect your Xbox and no other devices you could still set up your internet connection sharing via ethernet on your laptop.
If you can get that to work then it won't cost you any extra. Feel free to PM me if you need any help with that, I think I've had my Xbox connected in just about every possible way and have gotten pretty good at troubleshooting connection problems.
