Xbox 720 requires always-on Internet and PS4 gets cloud gaming

Doubt it very much, unless Microsoft really want to shoot themselves in the foot this generation...

Yeah, I'm also doubting the "always-on internet". The whole idea of a console is it's portability. If they take that away they may as well make it PC sized.

Isn't this behind almost all gaming PCs now?

IIRC, the X360 was lacking behind most PCs when it came out. The quality was still impressive tho. As for the 720.... sure it's "only" a 1.6GHz CPU..... but it's an 8-core 1.6GHz CPU. Not 8-threaded CPU like my i7... 8-core. I don't think that should be laughed at until we see some real world performance.

Whatever they put in, we will definitely see a rise in game quality and then, after 2-3 years, another plateau until they feel they have maximised the profits from the next generation of consoles.

They will always struggle to make hardware impress longer than 2-3 years. Consoles are just PC's that you can't upgrade and you have to wait 7 years for them to make a new one.

I am not trying to start a PC vs Console war here. I think OUYA are headed in a better direction. They have a simple system for non-PC enthusiasts to play games. And they will release a better model ever 12-18 months so you never lack performance.

It's about being consumer orientated rather than profit orientated.

Also, the SteamBox will be here soon...

I think you're mistaken. The 360 and PS3 was a bit more powerful than most (if not all) gaming PCs. For a short while, at least.
But I see a two good things for PC gamers from these specs:
Multicore processors will finally be utilized in games.
Games that are ported from consoles will be less demanding on PCs at first, so that means longer between needing to upgrade.

And one bad thing:
Since these specs are well below PCs (especially the graphics), games won't visually improve as much as it could.

Only in terms of CPU strength (i.e. More cores), PC GPU's were already miles ahead when the those consoles where released.

Apples and pears, cant really compare a console to a PC since consoles have set hardware limitations that games are designed around. Where as PC has 1000's of hardware combinations that need to be taken into account when making games.

Also consoles maximum output on most games is 720p (very few games can output 1080p) that also determines the performance of the consoles.

Games that are ported from consoles will be less demanding on PCs at first, so that means longer between needing to upgrade.

As long as Nvidia, Intel and AMD push out super fast and powerful hardware dev's will always make games that will require it.

*ninja edit

As for the always on internet requirement. Steam basically does the same thing if you think about it, it's useless without a connection. Then again you have a choice to use steam on your PC or not, but if you buy a console it's a different story - If you buy it knowing it requires a constant connection, you cant really complain.

They have to keep costs down. Most people wont buy a R7,000- R10,000 console, which is what a decent gaming rig is going to set you back. I think they both learned from the Sony's mistake last gen.

Can make a decent gaming PC for 5K excluding a LCD, just depends on what resolution you play and if you want maximum settings.

really don't see how needing to buy a new console every 12 months is a better model

The lack of a plateau in gaming.

Consumers don't have to buy a new console every year, but if you want better performance you can. Currently everyone is stuck on the same level for 7 years.

I dont really care, I'm always online anyway. So this model wont affect anything.
I'm just hoping it just doesn't require always on 20mb+ or something ridiculous!

So those days when your internet is down you're just SOL? I don't like the sound of that at all.

Ja I'll give you that, it wont be great. But generally I just play multiplayer online anyway. If my internet is down, I'll watch series or something.

In the end it would mean if you want to play the latest new games you will need to upgrade every year. Being stuck for a long period of time is good for the industry, (7 years yes is to long) it improves quality, if developers know they getting better hardware the next year, they will never need improve performance. Just compare what games looked like at the start of the xbox and what the xbox can do now on the same hardware.

This is the exact reason I don't believe this rumour. When I login with Windows 8 I login using my MS account, but it still allows me to use the same account login when my pc is offline. Honestly I believe someone is making it up for internet points.

I agree Ouya's direction is much better, there is however the flaw in that it uses mobile processors, which means (untill ARM processors become more powerful) you will lack performance*...

*This only holds true if comparing the Ouya to current+future Gen PS and Xbox consoles
