Xbox Live in SA imminent? Microsoft SA thinks so...

I don't want to focus on the negative stuff here and I do realize the positive effect this will have for us gamers in the future, but, I will have a really hard time to let go of my current UK based account. I've bought a lot of extra content using my UK account and if they don't allow me to migrate my account, I'll be essentially losing a lot of money. So, I hope they think ahead when they introduce a South African LIVE service. Allowing us to migrate our accounts is really the least they can do in an effort to reconcile the fact that they left us in the dark for so many years.

If they DON'T accommodate us with a migration feature it means they're STILL giving us the finger and basically telling us "So what?".

I don't actually care if they migrate our accounts over. As long as I can then finally download Duke Nukem 3D and Doom off XBL arcade. I am very much over the "This content is not available in your region." message. :)

My UK account is set up. I'm currently paying R350 odd for a 12 month sub, and R200 odd for 2100 mspoints prepaid.
I doubt local stuff would be any cheaper than that, so access to all available content is the only perk that matters IMHO...

What am I missing?

PS : Who needs local bandwidth downloads with Afrihost @ R29/GB or uncapped data from R200 these days...?

Unfortunately, whilst this news is very exciting, and being able to say that we have "official support!" is awesome, this doesn't mean much for me anymore.

Now that we have uncapped and I don't buy anything from the Marketplace I've essentially got local live support.

I have sympathy for the gamers that use US or UK Xbox Live profiles as I doubt your will be able to make them SA profiles. I guess MS will just say that you violated T&C of XBox Live when setting up a profile with a foreign region. Bummer!!!

Fortunately for me my gamer profile is still an offline profile with a good G25000 points, so I will be able to make it a Xbox Live account once (if) SA gets Xbox Live. Also, there are a few Arcade games I would like to download and play. For me it's all positive news.

I don't care about getting an SA profile. I don't see any reason to migrate over at all. The only reason I want Xbox LIVE available locally is to avoid content restrictions, and my profile region is completely irrelevant there.

I agree with you. It is very unlikely that a switch of account region will be done. Ts & Cs et al. But what I am saying is that : So what?

The nett effect of XBL in SA for anyone with an existing account (from whichever region) is that they will now be able to download currently region locked material (like certain COD map packs, arcade games, etc). That's it. Everything else will stay the same. You can buy XBL subs, you can buy ms points, most multiplayer games are using intelligent p2p hosting and bandwidth usage is basically irrelevant these days.

Some possible other perks (being optimistic):
We might get some local dedicated servers for games that need them a la Left 4 dead.
We have some new customer service agents to shout at if things go awry.

One out of left field....

I don't have a problem with the idea of having to create a new profile.
I have not bought any Microsoft points yet and so do not stand to lose anything.
If a local mirror for Xbox LIve content is set up, I have another use for the local bandwidth Telkom
gives me at the end of the month. [I don't see myself switching to uncapped just: performance is too
erratic for my liking.]

hmm
yeah
will have to see as time goes by...
I notice the trend these days is to just publicly state it will be ready 'soon' - soon is not a defined word so you can interpret it any way you want and it can mean anything, so even if you only implement it years later - their statement of 'soon' still covers them legally.
And in the mean time you hush the majority of people because they expect it to happen 'soon' (as per the actual accepted meaning 'in the very near furure').
So yeah, 2 birds 1 stone.
So ill wait until they actually grow a pair and do it, not just randomly saying 'soon' for the last couple of years...
Anyway, also as you guys stated - if we cant migrate our profile then its not gonna happen.

Yea, good points made all around. It's funny, there was a time where this would have been seriously big news, but right now I'm struggling to get even remotly excited. I may still create a sepperate local Live profile to DL region blocked stuff, I don't care about gamerscore.

Will this mean that I can create an account to have my GTA IV Saved games online in SA??? that would be nice - I've re-installed a few times and have to start the game from the beginning again EVERY TIME...quite annoying.

No, you won't have to do that - region blocking is done via IP access restrictions, not profile region.

I just wonder what the price of a Gold subscription will be. It always seems that we have to pay way more than the rest of the world for anything internet or game related. I won't be surprised if it's still way cheaper to use a UK or US account.

Or what say you guys?
