Xbox LIVE in South Africa soon

Xbox’s premier online gaming destination, Xbox Live, is set to launch in SA soon

*UPDATE: Got official word from Microsoft SA regarding a release date for both LIVE and the Kinect but since this thread is still pretty high up I didn't want to start a brand new one.

Xbox LIVE SA release date revealed

Yvette van Rooyen, Product and Marketing Manager for Xbox 360 in South Africa, confirmed today that both the LIVE service and the new Kinect motion-sensing input device will be available by the 2010 December holidays.

Yes but The question still remain can they convert there london one there that one street to a sa one.

It would be really silly of them to ignore all the people who created UK and US accounts here in South Africa to access Live. In a way, we supported Microsoft when they blatantly wouldn't support us. So if they won't acknowledge that fact and give us some means of migrating our accounts to a local Live account, they're saying "stuff you" right in our faces; and in that case they can shove Live SA sideways up their gloryhole.

Awesome news!! Hopefully the pricing won't come as anything unexpected.

Time for me to buy a new Xbox...

I'm not an Xbox gamer so excuse my ignorance but what does this mean for SA? Do you want to tell me before this you were unable to play online if you were in SA?

We were able to play online, but with UK/US based accounts. You had to buy subscriptions and MS points from 3rd party companies (kinda like the WoW prepaid time cards). With XBL officially here we would be able to link our credit cards with our accounts and purchase stuff hassle free. Also with the current setup it's a schlep donwloading region blocked content, setting up VPN's and whatnot. With XBL in SA these problems would dissapear as well. Another big bonus is matchmaking for MP games.

How would XBOX Live in SA enhance the matchmaking for multiplayer games? It makes no sense. You play with the guys hosting the games, whether it's local or international....please explain how you think it's going to improve the MP experience?

Wouldn't it look up local games first, then international if none is found?

The service will be available this summer and will focus first on delivering the core gaming and community features that have made Xbox LIVE the world’s premier online gaming destination, including matchmaking, friends list, Achievements, Gamerscore, a tailored Games Marketplace and more.

I don't know if Live works like that. I think it looks for the first game, first come, first serve. I don't think it brings latency into account. If you know the person hosting the game is a local gamer, then of course you'll have a better experience - but as far as a randomly joined game goes, I don't think it cares how far the host is from the players joining. That's why it's important to have a friends-list.

It definitely takes latency into account for Halo and for Modern Warfare 2 .... but not sure it makes much of a difference supporting xbox live in SA in regards to this. Except you may have more people playing locally if its supported here. Which would mean you are able to find more locally hosted games.

Good matchmaking software prioritises low latency connections.

December? Sigh, bleh.

So I'm going to build up a nice GS and a nice F-list up to then to only start over? :(

They seem to be steering clear of any comments whether or not you'll be able to migrate your UK/US account over to a South African Live account. I'm thinking "Stil bly is ook 'n antwoord" - which means NO.

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed that we're still going to have to wait that long. I mean, we've been waiting so long already, but now we have to wait until basically the end of the year? Not cool.
