Xbox One Pre-Order & Import

I notice Phoenix Tech is taking pre-orders for the Xbox One as they plan to import it.

I need some advice though:
  • I see they offer a 2 year warranty... do you think that will do?
  • Important: Do you know if I will be able to utilise my SA Xbox Live gamertag, or will some content/regions be blocked until the console is officially release in those regions?
  • I haven't bought from Phoenix Tech before - how's their rep?

Ok, so the big reason I want to import is that I'm worried I'll spend the money on something else before the official SA realease! lol

That is quite expensive as the PS4 is R6299 at Makro on Pre-Order. It's probably the camera that increases the price and the import tax.

Lol, ok, I'll remove my pricing remarks as that's not what I want this discussion to turn into. I was looking for advice :)

[UPDATE] Pricing observations removed from original post.

Oh, sorry. :-)

I am not sure if this has changed in the mean time but here it is:

I do hope the Live account will work in SA when it finally gets released in SA.

Thanks dampi! Yeah, I think I'll just have to dig deep for some patience and wait for the official release in SA :) Will be pointless if I can't actually PLAY games on my GAMES console! lol.

I also found this on http://www.lazygamer.net/general-news/the-xbox-one-wont-work-if-you-import-it-early/

"What that means is that the system will actively block you from activating games if you fall without the supported territories. And if you take a look at those regions on Microsoft’s own map detailing said regions, we don’t even feature. At all."

The Xbox One is not region locked - http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/16/4627338/xbox-one-games-will-not-be-region-locked

The only problems you may face is that some Xbox LIVE content is region locked, but that's no different to how it works at the moment. You'll just need a VPN and a US or UK account to download that specific content, but most content on Xbox LIVE isn't locked (generally only happens with the Mature rated content or very region specific content).

Urg, hope it's closer to March than May!!

I heard murmurings of an April 2014 launch, but that's only a tentative date. No-one at Microsoft SA knows when the One will launch locally.

As for region locking, that is indeed only for Live content and DLC for specific countries. You can get around that by signing up with an overseas account, but make sure you opt out of any information sharing programs on XBL when you do.

I dearly hope for an april release, original territories + 6 month = all territories? let's hope so!

Well then I suppose the whole original purpose of this thread has been rendered moot - I'm going to wait for the official release. I'm not spending that kinda cash and then risk not being to play games or having to set up VPNs.

Exactly my thoughts, MS SA needs to start talking up, especially after 22/11

Yeah, agreed. I just hope there's a good warranty system in place. I'm still traumatised after I got RRODs on two of my 360 consoles. I'm on my 3rd one!!
