Xbox One or PS4

I voted PS4, but I think it's WAY too early to know for sure. I probably won't get a next gen console at all.

Definitely. E3 should be interesting this year :)

I'm voting Xbox atm because it looks like they've tried to make it much more than a gaming console with all their tv integration and Smart Glass app. The Sony PS4 conference from a while back didn't impress me with their Share button and strong focus on the social aspect on gaming. Personally if I'm playing a Single Player game on Steam for instance, I don't like getting chat messages and I have no desire to allow people to watch me and jump in if I need help :p

Did you guys not pay attention to the fact that the guy kept moving back in front of the console and looked directly at it whenever he wanted to command it, and that when he wasn't looking at it, yet mentioning commands, it wasn't reacting?

The console gets turned on and recognises a specific user. It will regard any commands given by that effective 'player one' as being the commands it will act on, including hand gestures (assuming someone doesn't stand behind you, stick their arms through under yours and trick the console into thinking your shoulders just dropped).

It also clearly utilizes facial recognition in conjunction with voice recognition.

The TV functions? The thing has an HDMI input, so you'd connect your DSTV PVR decoder to that and then the console to your TV - even if the DSTV PVR decoder never gets a software update allowing you to command it (such as telling it to bring up the DSTV Guide or change channels), you'll still be able to at least watch TV via the console and have a live view of what's going on on the channel it's on via the home screen.

If MultiChoice release a software update for their PVR decoder and/or a new decoder that has the appropriate functionality, then tada, virtually all of the proposed TV functionality is available.

Netflix? Accessible by South Africans if you've a router that allows setting up custom routing tables so you can utilize a proxy for the service. Even if not, who knows, Microsoft SA may make a point of partering with Netflix for a regional service, bringing it to South Africa. Even if they don't, someone else might approach Microsoft SA instead, such as MultiChoice for their DSTV On-Demand services.

And if you're concerned about privacy with regards to the Kinect camera's video getting out onto the net, stop playing while naked, take sexytiems to the bedroom or consider integrating a privacy shade into your TV cabinet to cover the camera with when you want to be absolutely certain undesired video won't make it to the net.

I've owned a PSOne, PS2 Slim, and yet to own a PS3 (I hope). So it's obvious why I'd go PS4. SONY has been a part of my life since my early teens.

I would, however, only go for an Xbox 360 if won :p or if bought for me. And probably only for Forza. :)

What??? No backwards compatibility???

At least Microsoft bothered to show the actual console. (Cough, cough) Sony (cough)

The features sound great, but they could have at least put some more time in the design. It looks like a giant VCR player.

I'm pretty sure the console wars would have started already.

It's better to use the Edit Post button instead of posting multiple posts or else everyone will automatically assure you're spamming to get to 20 posts.

Also let's not turn this into a console war thread. I'm not a fanboy on either side and there's no point in being one. Just choose what's best for you, there's no right or wrong.

Edit:

Go on like this and you will be disqualified.

Are you permanently on the forums?? >.<

No, that would be absurd.

They needed to show games and instead focused on crap that anyone outside of the US can't use, as such my opinion is "meh". Maybe they can wow us at E3, but I doubt it.

I disagree. The purpose of the event was the announcement of the console to create hype to show off the games at E3. If they had showcased a bunch of games then they would have set themselves up for a very boring E3 Keynote.

I feel they fell at discussing the different internet rumours about the console itself.

Those who watched and/or visited the conference were there for a reason - to see the console, the controller, the games and the specs.
It is a gaming console after all, not a home theater system. Gaming is its core function/use. It's the main reason people are going to be buying their console in the first place. Having home theater is just an added bonus and a benefit to/for the consumer.

You don't go to a movie theater for the popcorn; you go for the movie.

Edit: Here's some AJ for you :)

Fair enough, that's your opinion. I don't care for console that can do TV nonsense, my PC can do all that without the kinect fluff. What I care about for a console is exclusive games, key word being GAMES and as such they did not sell me their machine.

This is why I have a PS3, for everything else I just play it or watch it on my PC. Angry Joe pretty much reflects my opinions on the matter.

Completely agreed. As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, exclusives are the reason I go for one console over another which is why I ended up with a PS3. Series/Movies I built up my HTPC for. If the Xbox was able to replace XBMC for me then I'd be quite happy to add that to my reasons to consider the Xbox more so than than the PS4.

Still need to watch the Angry Joe vid, so can't comment on that just yet.

Agree with this. I keep hearing that the new Xbox has nothing to do with gaming but all that will be done by the game designers at E3. Microsoft announced there will br 15 exclusives in the first year and showed what else the Xbox can do. In two weeks we will see those games.

Now that they've announced the console, they can focus on the games, I'm concerned about the backwards compatibility and that just shows the greed and consumerist approach of all provides and technologists, instead of providing access to previous content they now forcing consumers to repurchase new titles etc, from a corporate perspective this is great, milk the consumers for all they have and are willing to give.

I'm not surprised if they release a mini transaction system for simple requirements. Re the design its sleek but I can bet they going to re-release an 'elite' version 6 months from release with a different design.

As I get older I'm getting tiered of all these changes and constant need to change high end goods.

Buy a tablet 3 months down the line tablet is not viable anymore because of a new release... same with mobiles and other items. Scary how things have got! All in the name of progress i guess.

I know I wont be getting this on release way to heavy on the pocket...

My biggest concern is the hype they make of the new tech which is really not that new.....

Maybe not, but it all comes down to the developers. Look at how dated the current gen hardware is but they are still able to push out some decent games onto it. Don't get me wrong, the level of graphics they could crank out on a PC is far far superior. I'm just saying it's still impressive what they can achieve on hardware that's like 8 years old.

Tell you what; go get an old iMac G5 and a Pentium 4 desktop, right.

Develop a program for the iMac G5.

Now port that program to the Pentium 4 desktop.

Let me know how well that goes for you.

The XBOX360, like the PS3, uses a PowerPC-based RISC architecture processor.
The XBOX One and PS4 will both be using a x86-64 architecture processor.

The two operate fundamentally differently. Ensuring flawless backwards compatibility with games for the previous consoles would be an absolute nightmare for the developers of those games (some of which don't even exist anymore, such as THQ) and Microsoft/Sony when all consumers would need to do is - wait for it:

not sell their existing console

Amazing, innit?
