Sony won't likely be releasing a PlayStation Vita successor anytime soon, as SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida doesn't believe there's room for one in the current market, thanks to the popularity of smartphone gaming.
"That's a tough question. People have mobile phones and it's so easy to play games on smartphones. And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start," Yoshida said when asked about the possibility of Vita 2 during a Q&A at EGX 2015.
"I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect," he continued. "Touch-based games are fun - there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.
"So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming."
Sony has scaled back its investment in PlayStation Vita considerably over the past couple years, with no large-scale titles currently in development for the platform. That said, the company will be releasing an Aqua Blue model of the device in the United States this November.
