Pre-purchasing Trine 2 gets you early PC beta access

I have a good feeling about Trine 2. It's been on my radar ever since the initial screenshots went public, largely thanks to the remarkable use of color. Many of the images could even make for decent desktop wallpapers. On Steam, the game's pre-purchase switch has been flipped.

Paying early results in access to the two-level PC multiplayer beta, and it's also worth mentioning that Trine 2 is a Steam Play title, meaning your $14.99 gets you the game on Mac and PC. Love it. Additional pre-order opportunities, including those for a European retail edition, are expected to open soon.

December is sounding like the big month, although Frozenbyte ideally wants to put out all versions -- Windows, Mac, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network -- simultaneously. That could be tricky.

[Thanks, Paul]

Not that interested in beta but I'll most definitely be picking this up at some point. Perhaps I should finish the first Trine now...

I only played the demo of the first Trine, loved the game and knew that it would be a nice lil gem by looking at how well it ended up doing.

Haven't anyone learned anything from the unhappiness surrounding the BF3 beta? Beta privileges should not be handed out as an incentive to pre-order! The consumer generally doesn't realise they'll be getting very limited access to a very unfinished product with the express purpose of making it break, they only think they'll be playing the game early. You don't want your consumers to see the beta, you want them to see the finished product.

Jeepers I don't see what the great fuss is over. for goodness sake, where are all the pitch forks and people for dead space2's beta multi or what about assassins creed's multi tests. Geez, ffs, it's just a pre-order and not some ZOMG FUCK END WORLD thing.

you can easily pre-order and NOT play the beta it is NOT a MUST to ENABLE the game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol.

Just because BF3 beta was fail because of the fail users doesn't mean all other titles is fail automatically, god some people are so easily motivated into a single event belief that all must now be painted with this.

I mean fuck diablo 3, it's fail, for by god we are playing the beta, and it must FAIL and now all other titles are FAIL !!!!!

all I can say is this:

Look at the fanbase for Trine and look at the fanbase for BF3. There are a lot more children who would have been playing the BF3 beta, therefore there was a lot more moaning about useless shit. Trine is likely to have a smaller, but more mature fanbase.

Wow, overreact much? I was barely ranting, not even being particularly vocal about it.. No pitchforks in sight. ;)

Well yes, but then why are more and more publishers offering beta access as an incentive to pre-order? I think it might be a little counter-productive having a large beta that the devs would have to support, where a large part of the test group isn't offering any useful feedback. Isn't that the purpose of having a beta? Getting feedback other than 'Terran are OP' and finding bugs?

Unfortunately, fail users aren't tied to a specific title.. They're universal.

D3 is done quite different to the point I tried to make.. Blizzard are carefully selecting the system and location they want to test on. It's still a closed beta, like beta testing has traditionally been handled.

Fair enough. It's interesting though, I thought (before you posted) that you being a dev would hate to have beta testers == consumer.

I'll be honest.. I've never heard of this game in my life lol but been youtubing some gameplay vids etc.. looks awesome!!

Also it's something my laptop can handle haha procrastination!!!

feels like it *erm*, but noted and yes I was ranting :o

First level of testing is always the inner circle meaning actual developers and the developer who is working on the project. Then the client who is going to use it assist with the final rounds of testing to make sure he/she/they are getting what they've wanted. If you don't include the "normal" people you miss out on few issues that seems normal to a developer, you always need their input from their point of view for a decent product, period. This is standard procedure where I work at.

Way I read your reply it seemed just because a game has a beta it's fail, just because it includes the public it's fail. The whole point of this thread was to make other people who liked Trine aware that pre-ordering is opened and they are welcome to pre-order it if they wanted to, not that they must pre-order and must partake in the Multiplayer beta, not the actual full game beta.

more helpers less free riders.

Oh, not at all, just that Joe Public that does get the pre-order specifically for the beta would likely be a bad beta tester.

That bit I was fully aware of when I commented, just wanted to add my 2c about the current industry trend :)

I do hope it works out that way. Hopefully the devs will find a way of including as many people in beta's without compromising the quality of feedback they receive; That'd be win-win for the devs, publishers, and the over-eager consumers.

Regrettable I have to inform you that your 2c is worthless :p

Maybe it be better to scrap the whole beta access with pre-ordering and go with something like early access of few days with the completed product where it's viable. Besides that would in the case of BF3 give the people that's hosting a chance to oil up on lesser numbers. There is also which works good imho that you are entitled to fist dlc and something extra for free or discount voucher(s).

I'd really curious to see how GrimDawn pans out where you get access early if you donate towards the cause by pre-ordering now.
