'Young People Are Losing Interest in High-End Games,' Kojima Says

I think it's precisely because the majority of AAA games nowadays no longer require any amount of thought to play. Have a look at the last few years of AAA console games. The majority of them were pretty shallow, gameplay-wise.

There's just so much more going on in the non-AAA development scene. People can only play third-person cover shooters and FPS games for so long before they get bored and look for their fix elsewhere.

Ahh so you think the problem is then cyclical? As in studios began making games that are shallow and pretty in order to satiate the mentality that the youth of the age are shallow and pretty?

If he's trying to make a hint that MGS is loosing it's fan base then I have the answer for him. MGS's gameplay is pretty alright but them cutscenes are the length of entire movies! I remember trying MGS4 and not making it past the first cutscene that exceeded 15mins. I love EPIC cutscenes like those found in Mass Effect, but they were the perfect length.

When it comes to AAA titles in general I'd like to point out that Skyrim is one of the best selling RPG's of last-gen and that required to massive time sink which 10mil+ people were all too happy to do. AAA games are not a problem, just don't make them all on rails and please STOP trying to copy Hollywood. Games like Beyond Two Souls are a real problem in gaming imo, the levels of boredom that accompany them is immense.

I loved Beyond as well as it's predecessors Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit, purely because there are very few games like them. The Walking Dead game is of a similar genre and I loved that too. Those kinds of games are few and far between so I don't believe they have any effect on the market as a whole. I like taking time away from the usual third person action adventure shooters and playing games like these once in a while, and I for one wish there were more games like them.

I don't believe that "young people" are shying away from AAA titles. I believe the issue here, is developers have lost the definition of what a AAA title is supposed to be in the first place.

I can partially agree with this, although I would say what also plays a role is that the expectations from the AAA landscape has evolved differently to what developers are producing.

This is indeed true. The younger generation doesn't have the same zest for deeply involved games as before. I think the advent of the internet and the whole "instant" culture has diminished the interest in a game that requires you to dedicate a large portion of time and thought into playing as intended.

I don't know. I think the problem lies in the fact gaming has become so big. When games were more complex the games industry wasn't as big as it is today. But also that publishers are just looking to make a quick buck as fast as possible.

For me I do enjoy complex games but its getting harder and harder for me to get into them the older I get :( I like to just pick up and play these days.

I don't think anyone can really say exactly what the problem is, but I definitely think the fact that everyone was racing to appeal to the lowest common denominator plays a large role in it. I suspect that by trying to appeal to as large an audience as possible, they've actually alienated large market segments.

I've played all because their stories are pretty good, their gameplay is atrocious though. I don't wanna watch a video game, I want actual gameplay in my video game. So I would love more stories like Heavy Rain (etc...) but we need gameplay. Shadow of the Colossus, ICO, Brothers A Tale of Two Sons (Etc...) are perfect examples of that.

Not every compelling game has 3rd person shooting mechanics, but that also doesn't mean that the only way to achieve fantastic story telling with the odd button prompt every 30mins .

Just talking about David Cage's games has me thinking about catching up on some zzz's :p

The gameplay of David Cage's games is definitely not to everyone's tastes, I'll admit, and Beyond definitely took a step backwards compared to Heavy Rain by taking away even more control from the player, but I do enjoy the branching stories etc (which was severely lacking in Beyond too). I dunno, I guess it's a mixed bag. They just need to find a way to make the gameplay less "cutscene-y" (:p) but without losing the uniqueness of those titles. But anyhow, back on topic to the young ones losing interest in AAA titles and all that :p
