Your Favourite Flight Games?

Hi pilots!

I am a huge flight sim fan and love everything from Ace Combat to DCS. Props, jets, choppers, if it flies I love it.

Wanted to be a pilot all my life but sadly maths sucks hard, I sat in on a few helicopter training classes but it was all so over my head I was scared to put the cash down to learn and possibly fail.

Anyway, simulations are where its at for me....for now.

What I want to know is, are there other flight sim lovers here and what are your favourites?
Mine are IL2, ArmA and the Ace Combat series. Also anything that features the greatest plane of all time(IMO), the A10.

I share your love of things that fly. After high school I wanted to become a pilot as well, and math is not my problem. My problem was a 3 prong attach on my physical being; I'm too blind, too fat and too tall to become a pilot. There are actual limits to those attributes in becoming a pilot. So yay.

Anyway, flight sims that I've loved over the years are:

Microsoft Flight Simulator:
Some of my most fond memories was experiencing MS Flight Sim 95 for the first time as a child. I actually planned a whole trans-continental flight, with angles and checkpoints and everything. I ran the flight in 8x speed on Autopilot after getting it at cruising altitude, and waited and ran through my checkpoints as I crossed them. This flight ended successfully, and is still one of my proudest gaming achievements ever.

X Plane:
I "procured" a version of this game as it's crazy expensive, and although it's very much similar to MS Flight Sim, there are different planes and it feel even more realistic. Very challenging, but lots of fun

Kerbal Space Program:
Sure, the aim is to rather build spaceships and stuff, but the game, especially with mods, adds a whole host of options, making it a very realistic type flight sim, plus you have the responsibility of building your plane. It is then, with the FAR mod installed, that you very quickly learn about aerodynamics and lift and center of weight and why plane design is not just that simple.

There are some games that I've seen that would be worth a shot as well: aerofly FS looks super interesting. Skydrift is by no means a simulator, but some really fun arcade style flying ans shooting. Played a few hours of it and I can recommend it

Sorry if it's not up your alley or not a flight sim by your standards, but I still maintain that (apart from MS:FS) that Elite Dangerous is one of the truer flight sims out there. With flight assist turned off and having a HOTAS, it puts just about everything else to shame and is a beast to master.

With movement directions of; vertical, horizontal and lateral thrust complemented with pitch, yaw and roll.

What more do you want from a "flight-sim" and coupled in zero gravity. :p

Elite Dangerous is indeed a good flight simulator, but not that true to physics when it comes to orbital mechanics. The gravitational impact of various planets and moons plays no effect on the flight controls or flight pathing. So, as a flight sim, it good and proper, but real true life space flight is a lot more complicated than it is portrayed.

I'm obviously nit-picking you annoy you...."whistling::love:

ooh... I was getting so revved up there for a second, until I read that last bit.

But honestly, wait until you play Horizons and try some planetary landings with a 6G planet. Neigh, I challenge you to even try a 2G planet like MalicE did and ended up face planting :p

There something amazing about low altitude flying through canyons and battling with the gravitational pull. I'm on my way back to civilized space to repair my hull which is now at 14% as a result. I turned 90' from surface and started accelerating at about 1km from surface, only to realise I need to boost to escape the pull, which I did at 300m only to still smack the surface. Luckily I escaped alive!

Anyway, just a little story :p see how much you wind me up!

HEY!

What happens on ROSS 128 stays on ROSS 128!

:D

But I totally agree, Elite is a fantastic flight sim and deserves rightful mention here.

Also, bradbear117 if you are into the A10, why not try out Digital Combat Simulator: A-10C Warthog? I think you as a sim fan would like it.

Just a heads up. The Hog can have a steep learning curve depending on your fsim experience level.

Yeah I saw a Youtuber try and play the game, and him spending over 30 minutes just figuring out how to actually start the plane, not even close to flying. As far as I know it's as close to the real thing normal retail games can come to a simulator of a plane.

Yep, the ideal cold start time is 6 minutes or less. I used the following check list while learning but lost interest in the A10. About 44 steps in total.

Holy shit!!!!!! When a "game" has a 4 page 44 step startup procedure, JUST TO GET THE PLANE MOVING, you know it's a simulator. And I take it all the other DCS games are like this as well

Nah not really. The F15 and Su-27 startup is very basic in comparison.

Switch on electronics
Close cockpit
Start up both engines
While they spin up, switch nav, cockpit and landing lights on.
Contact tower and start taxi when engines ready.

jeez, thats hectic! and awesome. hecticly awesome. I wish they would explain the why's and what's of all those switches.

They got you covered. DCS A-10C Flight Manual

It's recommended you study all 671 pages before loading up the sim.

I will do it.

I like Wings Over Europe and iL-2's simulation style, not as in depth but still enough to make you feel like you are in control of everything. I honestly couldn't be arsed with radio'ing the tower but I do like chatting to my wingman now and again.

I bought IL-2 Cliffs of Dover off STEAM for R100 as well as 1946.

Totally awesome, I highly recommend these sims for you flight fans.

Tally Ho chaps!
