Your Kickstarter / Early Access experiences so far.

There's a GIF for that
So far the progress on games I've backed has been fairly mixed, but there are a couple that still look promising.

The only game that I've backed that has actually been released so far is the Tex Murphy game. It looks decent but I must admit I haven't played very much of it yet.

Satellite Reign and War for the Overworld are both looking extremely promising so far.

War for the Overworld is apparently releasing early next year, and every time I play the beta I'm more and more impressed with what they've managed to pull off.

Broforce is already a lot of fun as well.

Star Citizen seems to be getting a lot of hype from many people, but honestly so far I'm not impressed with it at all, and every time they try to sell more crap I just get more annoyed and negative about it. Same thing when I update the game for over 5 hours and I see that nothing has changed since the last time I've tried it.

I've seen no real gameplay footage of Armikrog yet, so I don't really have a clue what's going on there, but at least it seems they're still working on it.

StarForge is absolute shit and no one should even touch it.

So how has your experiences been so far?

I've backed:

Shroud of the Avatar: It's coming along nicely and is currently in early access on Steam. I don't know why I fell for all the marketing since it's not really my kind of game. It does look like it may be fun though.

Stasis: Yay for being South African! Pretty and atmospheric. It looks like it's going to be good.

To Azimuth: I backed it last week but unfortunately it did not reach its target.

Hmmm I backed something else a while back that also didn't reach its target.

Nice idea for thread, thanks Eugene. Definitely sub.

The more and more I look at Star Citizen the more I think their goals keep getting added and added. Granted they've received >65mil but I still think they're being very ambitious.

Granted, I can't ever recall actually backing any Kickstarter (or similar) projects, or Early Access.

I've backed 3 games so far on Kickstarter.

The first one is Maia. It's been in early access on Steam forever, and it seems to be developing really slowly. I backed it because it looked very promising and Dungeon Keeper-y. So far though, there is not much to do in the game.

I also backed Star Citizen when it was still on Kickstarter. I have high hopes for the game, but as has been mentioned, I'm just afraid of the feature creep. I would prefer that they get the main game done and playable, and then after that they can start adding all the other features that have been promised, like FPS for example. I understand why they are including FPS, but I backed this game to have an awesome space sim; if I want to play an FPS I'll play Battlefield. So here's to hoping it will be awesome when it comes out and that it won't be too far behind schedule :/

The last game I backed was Sui Generis. It is a top down RPG, but with totally different control mechanics. It looked interesting and something in the back of my mind tickled when I saw it, it made me remember a game I played when I was much younger, but I could never figure out what that game was. I have played the initial combat releases of the game and the controls are really difficult to get used to. Your timing has to be very good to land proper hits.

So far, none of the games I've backed have been released.

I have a bit of overkill on kickstarters. I finally stopped backing at some stage after finally getting it out of my system, but are awaiting quite a few games and a movie(s) now.

The ones that has been released :

Gigantic Worlds science flash fiction anthology : Kind of still awaiting the physical book - received digital copy. is ok...
Divinity: Original Sin : Awesome game, very glad I backed it. Got Divinity Dragon Commander with it when backing but didn't really play it.
Legends Of Dawn : A flop in my eyes can't play it on my machine - some graphical issues. Could have been so much more.
Elite: Dangerous : Recently releashed and it is brilliant so far, can't wait for future addons.
Star Citizen : Supported it as well. Don't have as much faith in it as Elite though although I spent more. For the same reasons as mentioned in above posts. It's suffering from scope crawl.
Conclave : Online RPG. Quite nice for what it is, but don't have time to play it.
Project GODUS : Well kind of, still on pre-release on PC, but released on Android as free to play as well. Kind of lost focus I think typical of Moneleux...
An Honest Liar: The Amazing Randi Story : Apparently released. Haven't seen any of the movie yet as they producers are holding release back... :(
Wasteland 2 : Very well done, will be definitely be putting in more time on this.

Still to be released but with playable beta's (like Godus above) :

Balrum : Looking good so far.
Malevolence : I dunno, in my opinion looks horrible so far - although the idea is good. They seriously need asthetic artists.
War for the Overworld : Not sure, updates looks good but - still not sure where they are going for their campaign.
Maia : Same as Overworld above.
Carmageddon: Reincarnation : Played some of the early Beta. Probably shouldn't have. Hoping it will get better.
Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues : Looks to be shaping up. Enjoy some of the forays into the Beta but still needs a lot of work.
Grim Dawn : Played some of the first chapter, shaping up to be pretty decent.
Broken Age : Excellent, what else would you expect from Tim.

Still waiting on :

The Mandate : Have high hopes for this one.
Paradise Lost: First Contact : Ditto. Although they have suddenly had to get a new programmer, which doesn't bode well.
STASIS : From SA... had to back him. Looks good what I have seen from the playable demo.
CANDLE : Could be good, but with each update makes me think it is moving away from what was intended.
Henrietta Bulkowski : Still waiting - I hope it will be good
LIONESS : Kinda gave some games away nobody liked but the main project has dissapeared for all I know.
Armikrog : Looks to be shaping up to be an excellent game
Torment: Tides of Numenera : The verdict is still out but the skills on this team hopefully bodes well.
ASYLUM: From the designer of Scratches : Could be good if it ever comes out.
Meriwether: An American Epic : Haven't really heard much on this. Should maybe have skipped this one.
Sui Generis : I really hope this one will be good - it showed a lot of promise.
Sword of Fargoal 2: Classic Dungeon-Crawler Adventure : Played some of the beta - I think too little too late, but maybe it will still surprise me.
Project Eternity : Will hopefully release soon. looks like it will be good.

Failed projects :

Forsaken Fortress - They screwed it up. They mentioned a comeback but I am not holding my breath.

Whew I think that's it. I'm not spell checking that lot so please ignore mistakes...

Kickstarter

I backed Planetary Annihilation on Kickstarter - and landed up wishing I hadn't. The game was finally "released" in an unfinished state without any offline play which meant you had to use the Ubernet servers which were terrible, maing it nigh impossible to play. They have finally added in the promised features but to be honest the gameplay isn't actually that great. Maybe now that it functions I'll give it a proper try again. My main gripe though is that even though I backed the game for $20 - it resulted in being on sale for less than that even before it's official release, would've been better to wait.

Early Access

Day Z Standalone: I got this mainly because some friends were getting it too and I had heard nothing but good things about the Arma 2 mod. I was really disappointed when I actually played it, it certainly felt unifinished, but granted its description did say that. The real problem is that it's still in early access and it just seems like it'll never really reach a final polished state. I guess we'll see.

Speed Runners: this game is apparently early access but is a complete experience already. I've had hours of fun with it and even if they don't add a single thing, it will still be a great and entertaining game.

I got gifted a copy of Grim Dawn which is already an excellent game even in its early access state. I have already put 60 hours in and I imagine I will still put in quite a few more hours. Highly recommended to fans of Titan Quest or ARPG's in general and it is only about $17 on the sale at the moment.

I bought Broforce and it's already a lot of fun as well.

The only other early access game I have is Afterfall Reconquest. At the moment only (a part of) episode 1 is out and it still needs a lot of work, but I am happy with my purchase. More so after the recent art direction change that the game had.

High points:
Wasteland 2 - amazing
7 days to die - wow, everything I've always wanted since I first played DayZ and Minecraft.

Low points:
Planetary annihilation - game had real promise, but too much lag when trying to play online. Kept waiting for offline mode to come out only for them to keep on pushing it back further and further. Finally when their hand was forced after their new kickstarter failed epically did they only create a half-baked offline mode. The game went v1.0 before it had offline mode and it got murdered in it's reviews. They probably killed off the game right there and then.
Stomping land - game had real promise but developer just dropped off the face of the planet.
Elite Dangerous - fun game with a ton of potential, but the developer decided to drop the promised offline mode at number 99. Now the future of the game is entirely in their hands. Also their customer support is horrible, and they still haven't refunded people for their broken promise 30 days later.

Bought Planetary Annihilation...still crashes on starting a game. Even after it went out of early access. FAIL!!!

Kerbal Space Station (in beta now)...very cool...def had a good bit of fun designing crazy rockets. Even at a very amateur level its fun (build crazy rocket & see if it works)...though I gather people take it seriously as a "true" Sim too.

Don't think I'm going to be going for more early access tbh...they're hit and miss and I've still got unplayed AAAs. (Glad I bought Kerbal though)

I've only backed two Early Access games, those being Broforce way back last year, and Divinity: Original Sin a week before launch this year.

My experience with both games have been great. Both have had really solid developers behind them, and I can't wait to see what they do next.

I still believe that Early Access games should be an exception, not the norm. There's way too many unfinished or lackluster titles to take the risk in my opinion.

I'd definitely recommend Grim Dawn to anyone who is a fan of hack-'n-slash RPG's, especially if they're also into post-apocalyptic zombie shenanigans. Quite a fun game, and they're very receptive to their audience.
