What do you guys think of this car? It's a brand new 2011, United Grey, VW Golf GTi DSG with xenons, sunroof etc.

It's pretty. That's about all I can say. Unfortunately I don't know much about cars.

I can tell you one thing though. I currently drive a 4x4 and the thing eats fuel like you can't believe. My next car is mostly going to be determined on fuel consumption. So I don't know what this Golf's fuel consumption is, but it's something worth looking at with the fuel prices going through the roof.

It's fuel consumption is okayish... for it's size it's actually quite thirsty! But in any case, I hate the mags... the color is one that shows scratches easily, and it's a tough color to find in case you need to do some panel beating or painting.
The car isn't bad, it's a solid ride with reasonable comforts. But it's a hatchback, and an expensive hatchback at that...

I would rather go for something else... Like these:
http://www.vw.co.za/en/models/polo_sedan.html
http://www.mccarthylimited.co.za/6/VehicleID/10275

Or something like that, bigger engine... better comfort... better looks (lancer)... same quality build... good resell value.

If you're set on the VW stable go for the Polo GTI rather. It's ever so slightly quicker to 100 than the (significantly more expensive) GTI and a helluva fun drive.

If you're looking to fork out that much cash though I'd recommend test driving the Mito or the shit-hot A1. The DS3 is also a blast if you're willing to risk a Frog car :p

I also have 4x4 (Triton 2.5D 4x2 actually) and my Fuel consumption isnt great, around 11L/100km in town, but I gladly pay it. The sheer size of the vehicle, you can see over people in traffic etc etc etc, makes it worth it. IMO :)

I would seriously consider the A1, it's an awesome looking card. The GTI certainly is not bad, but I reckon the A1 wins in the appearance category. Admittedly it's a little bit more expensive than the GTI.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I also looked at the Polo GTi and I have to admit, the quality on the inside is nice, until you compare it to that of the Golf GTi - then you start to see where they cut corners. After all, it's still only a Polo, and it shows. As for the performance between the Polo and the Golf - I've seen a couple of Youtube clips and the GTi is stronger and slightly faster than the Polo - even though their 0-100 times are quoted as being the same.

Also, the Polo has NO option of Xenons in South Africa, and the panoramic roof that it can come with DOESN'T close on the inside OR open up - so it's a piece of glass designed to bake the occupants. So yeah - you'd have to be pretty biased or clueless to prefer the Polo over the Golf if you had the money to spend on the Golf. If you're on a tight budget, the Polo would be "ok".

Dude, I can actually pick up a WRX STi from Subaru in Bruma - but my issues is that I live in the West Rand of JHB and there are NO service centres anywhere near this place! So servicing my car would be a nightmare :( Also, I've heard the scooby's in SA are rather unreliable?

U must be hearing wrong

Extremely tought machines

level of engineering is very good, remember okes drive the HELL out of them and they still go

they often been compared to the good ol toyota Hilux which we all know is dam relaible (top gear anyone?)

+1.

I've driven the A1 a couple times and it's damn sexy.

Dude, my wife and I were following the development of the A1 since day 1. When it was finally released in SA we rushed to our nearest Audi dealership and were CRUSHED when we saw the rear-end of this, otherwise good-looking, car. The rear end spoils it. The lights "hanging" over the lip of the boot looks CRAP, and that's putting it mildly.

Also, it doesn't compare in value when you put it next to the Polo GTi.

p.s XeroS1x, I hope you're talking about the Polo GTi when you compare "looks" with the A1. Seriously the Golf GTi is a better looking car and way more expensive as well. (why the hell did this turn into Polo GTI thread??)
