Your personal best and worst games of 2015

The Joker
Thanks for the read. Entertaining.

I'm glad I was able to entertain you :D

I was a little harsh on Fallout 4, but after spending 2 hours playing it at my brothers house I wanted to slit my own wrists lol

I should add, these are my personal choices..I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me xD

Certainly agree with some of it, including Fallout. Though I've spent about 40 hours, I also have my reservations about it.

Best games of the year:

Ark Survival Evolved: When I 1st started playing the game I hated everything about it, so much so that I got a refund for it...a month later I bought it again...this time I spent around 2 hours playing by myself...and still hated it...lol..Yip refunded!! Then I decided to buy it again..this time buying it for my gf and some of our friends, the game came alive and I've spent around 810 hours + just playing this with the group. The game is unforgiving when you start...everything wants to kill you and considering on death you lose all equipped gear and items...its quite brutal!! As a multiplayer experience with friends the game is unmatched, there is so much to do and explore and hours of fun to be had that we ended up playing for 10 hours straight quite a few times.

So, please explain or elaborate between what has happened from then till now.

Quoted from Steam Ark Review:
I'm doing this review for my tribe. We are 8 players, we've had to rebuild completely 4 times (Server wipes, asshole tribes ect) We've just recently had to rebuild after a server wipe, we were the top tribe on the server before the wipe and it's taken us roughly a month to get back to that position, although we aren't nearly as strong as we used to be. We've started breeding dinos and are finally into our 8th gen of rex's and 6th gen of quetzals, so we were pretty happy... Then the new patch came and made all the hours we put in redundant and pointless. Nerfing the dinos by 75-80%??? Who had this brilliant idea? Or maybe its because you guys are now catering to the console crowd?

I've been wanting to write a glowing review for this game and in 1 foul swoop the devs ruined it completely.

I bought 7 copies of this game for friends...I regret every single purchase now.

I know I am keen to hear it, and I hope some others are as well. Seeing as this happens to be hugely popular title.

Well they released an update...a piss poor one..
I'll explain in detail.

Ark is a survival game, you start with nothing and it is a really brutal world, you build a little thatch hut, you farm some berries and pretty soon you're established as a giant noob...Everything in ark wants to kill you...so it's a good idea to get something to protect you..in this case I would recommend a trike or a raptor. You then have to find a lowish level one, use tranq arrows to take it down and then spend a couple of hours taming it to make it your pet, in this time you have to guard it, give it narcotics and feed it...you can't exactly leave it alone or it'll wake up or be killed. So that's basically the just of it.

All the animals on Ark have their own taming times, food that they prefer, amount of narcotics needed ect and it can be a very time consuming thing. Example 1, a lvl120 T-Rex will take around a 150 tranq arrows to take down...While shooting at it it'll try to kill you of course...So you manage to take it down...you then have to sit with it for a good 3 hours depending on the server rates for it to tame.

So we have around 70 dino's most of them were near max level when we tamed them and then still leveled them to their max (You can add 63 levels to a dino after taming), this takes time..its a grind and having done that with the majority of our animals, its taken nearly a month after the server wipe.

So we have some insanely strong animals, some of the strongest on the server..in fact our 1 Giga is the strongest tame on the server, we are the alpha tribe on the server so people generally don't fuck with us.

So then yesterday the devs released a patch...nerfing all tamed animals by 75% dmg and hp, making them nearly useless for everything. I can pretty much kill a tamed rex with a fucking pike now....Which is utter madness!!

This is a game based on survival of the fittest and living with and taming dino's. They pretty much made the dino aspect worthless now, the main selling point of the game..destroyed!! If you venture into the wild now with a tamed rex and come up against a wile one you'll get wrecked completely...Even though you spent hours perfecting your rex.

This is a basic explination and for you to really understand you would have had to spend the time we did getting to the level we are. We've spent around 900 hours each playing this game.

I can't help but feel this was done for the console kiddies, they never ever mentioned a change like this, until the game launched on the Xone,

The Joker - Thanks for the feedback. I can understand your frustrations. If you move to another server with the old version (pre-patch)?

We'd have to start from scratch and as far as I know all the servers updated to this version. I certainly don't want to start from scratch again, seeing as we've done it 4 times...Its a mission and it takes so much time and effort.

But you can at least get it back again :)

What sever you playing on?

I haven't logged in since the 2 big patches. hope my Rexie is still ok. she tends to wander out the camp. somehow she gets over the spikes...

Could you elaborate on why you have some reservations, interested to here from someone who has sunk 40 hours into it. I'm a little tentative about the series, I'm worried I will feel the same as The Joker, as in its bland and dumbed down. its kind of the Bethesda way with their games in general.

Grievous - Let me start by saying this; I am a big old school Fallout fan. Fallout 2 still remains my favourite of the series, maybe even my favourite game of all time.

Since Fallout became first person it lost some appeal to me, though F3 was a fantastic game it lacked something and hence started the decline of the franchise for me. One thing I will always admit however is the world design. I am a sucker for the post apocalyptic design, and Fallout has never let me down in this regard. F4 does this well, the world design is beautiful. However, since F3 and becoming first person there has been a slow demise in game and F4 proves this, it has become too much like an FPS.

I feel the lack of innovation though from Bethesda in this regard, it feels as though they made the title purely because the community demanded it. If you can remember what Fallout 3 looked like back then, is what Fallout 4 looks/feels like now. Sure the graphics are better but you wouldn't really think so unless put side-by-side. but it's not the graphics that make the game and I'm okay with that.

The community house building feature is just damn right annoying to me, I couldn't be arsed. Sure it's optional, but in the beginning it feels a little compulsory. This is not why I play Fallout!

The story and premise is a bit meh as well. Not nearly as interesting or intriguing as previous stories. I never really feel compelled to progress it apart from the need to get it done for progression purposes (if that makes sense ). I normally just went off and did my own thing.

The game to me lacks some character that previous games had for me.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Don't read too much into as I know most fans love it and have spent countless hours in it. To me it just didn't capture me, much like Skyrim. I just couldn't get into that. Fallout 4 just isn't really a game I can come back to, I've enjoyed my time with it and loved it, but now I am done with it and have sold it. Fallout 2 though I still come back to.

Damn dude, thanks for the response. Sadly I feel the same about fallout 2 being my favourite. So it's little disappointing to hear. What you said pretty much how i expected I would find the gameplay when watching videos of it. And what you said about the house building is exactly what i thought when i 1st saw it.

Look, I feel it's worth a play (as a fan of the franchise). So maybe try borrow it or buy it on special. Definitely not worth R800 I paid for it though, but hey, I got enjoyment while it lasted.

Yeah definitely, I will most likely get it a couple years down the line, when they release a game of the year edition. I'm in no rush to get it.

I am actually willing to say that you can play Fallout : New Vegas now (and get it for $5) and most likely get a more interesting Fallout experience than in Fallout 4. There really did not happen -that- much between the games to be honest. The settlements-mini-simcity thing is just nonsense and was half arsed imho. It's like bethesda decided to drop the map-builder (which most bethesda games have for modders anyway) randomly into the game instead of shipping it seperately , so that leaves very little that is actually new.

I just went back through the thread to see if I could get the opinion of someone who has something positive to say about fallout 4. Wanted to find out how it compares to the previous entries. And... you were the only one. So it's really not sounding good. I thought 3 was alright, never finished it got bored. las vegas, started up and once I got through the create character part (which i hate), saw the wasteland, and was, "yeah not again", and never played it again.

It's not a bad game, i consider any game that i actually play through and complete a "good game" . According to steam i spent 86 hours in it, that should say something. That said, in hindsight, the game never inspired me, the story was boring, the character building was nowhere near as intricate and interesting as Fallout 3 and the stuff that i did invest alot of time on was ultimately of zero consequence (the settlement part, lots of hours in that, it is just a distraction of no consequence). I could see the immersion breaking VERY early in the game with the repetitive nature of all the missions. You would literally do 1-2 missions and realize it is all on a loop....i only did them to level up.

I also finished Witcher 3 last year, and finished it the same way as Fallout 4, i played the main campaign and then lost interest in doing any of the repetitive side mission stuff, but unlike Fallout 4 the side missions were quite well crafted and did not go into an infinite repeat loop (like WoW Dailies) . Witcher 3 however , i really did enjoy the story, and i did feel inspired to play further to see where things are going and it felt all fresh and shiny to me . In Fallout 4? Not quite, what drove me was purely the character building side of things and once i was there i kinda felt "meh" .

I think this is a game that you can wait for a steam special to be honest.
