Zynga is Bigger than EA

I’ve never liked Electronic Arts much, DRM-hawking corporate bad guys that we hardcore gamers make them out to be. But this is a sad day, indeed. BusinessWeek has reported that Zynga, makers of Farmville, have surpassed EA in worth, growing to 5.51 billion, next to EA’s 5.22 billion.

Imagine that. EA is a gaming GIANT, arguably the most prolific, holding some of the world’s most legendary franchises (The Sims alone is the best selling PC game of all time), and Zynga has been able to surpass it all by selling pictures of wheat and cows to bored housewives.

I dunno what else to say. Seems the end times of gaming are upon us. Then again, EA is also responsible for Shaq Fu, so maybe this is just karma.

Now let us hold hands and weep.

Wow, I never expected this. Seems like Farmville will be a permanent fixture. :wtf:

No, it's scarily true. Think of it, FB has 1/2 a billion users - a captive audience. It's a great and more effective marketing tool than traditional methods. Also, how many people play farmville - and want to do so quickly? No problem, just pay us money to make your game automagically enhanced...

Zynga is busy getting nailed by the anti-privacy people, though. Seems like they've been selling user data to advertisers (which is illegal according to the FB terms of usage). FB is also busy hammering them. Will be interesting to see how their net worth takes a hit when one of their primary avenues of income gets shut off.

Funnily, Zynga won't be concerned at all about the move from FB if it ever happens. They were proposing awhile back to completely sever themselves from FB - and already they have the beginnings of that severance. It's called http://www.farmville.com As of yet it's still linked to FB, but if they were to be severed people already go there and more will if they can't play their favourite app from FB.

It's the end of the world as we know it .... and I don't feel fine :(

EA is the devil anyway but then so is facebook and Zynga

Ur forgetting one thing... it's not 500 000 000 anymore its 499 999 999 because I dont play that crap, and be like the rest who put so much money into pointless games...

LOL! Dude, all games are for all intents and purposes pointless.

1. CoD: You kill someone and they respawn. You can't ever completely kill them - they just come back!

2. People spent ten years playing Starcraft... learning the intricacies, nuances of all strategies and tactics only to...

have Starcraft 2 released and fck up everything they've learn't.

3. People who go to competitions for sports games. They spend hours upon hours of their time getting good enough to become World Champ at FIFA/PES/Madden/NBA only to...

realise that if they had spent that time with friends and real sport they'd have much better balanced lives and be far healthier than they currently are.

Point is... they are having fun and there's really nothing wrong with it and those gamers aren't worth any more or less than you or I (which this article shows to a tee). At the end of the day, both sets of people are staring at a screen/TV which has on it a virtual representation of something that they could possibly do in real life if they had the skill/money/time/balls to do.
